I did one side at a time, and I was swapping the spindles over to disc brakes, so it was apart already. It was up on 2 jackstands under the frame and I just left the floor jack under the lower arm, wood block under the arm also as a safety.

The spring tension will help the Ball joints "pop" From the wheel spindle, so don't take the castle nuts completely off. Leave them on about 5 threads. Removing the 40 year old cotter pins can be a chore as well.

Job completed. Either the bushes weren't as tight as I was expecting, or they were loose as I didn't have too much problem undoing them. I can't see that I am any stronger than any of you 
Not too much grief. I eventually found a 28mm socket. Discovered that a zerg is the same as a grease nipple and invented a trick for getting the spindle out of the A and back in. I'll post some pictures when I get back from inspection. Thanks to everyone for their advice.

yes, that was the invoice for the parts ;-(
it was a expensive week as I had to get the shocks on the
4WD replaced as well. Didn't get much change out of $1500

I tried two dealers in San Diego and one told me to get lost and the other said $32 per bushing. Could you please let me know where the secretly awesome Nissan parts place is? Thank you!

I am having the same problem. I removed, cleaned and installed the passenger side. The driver's side is a different story. Used a very large impact with no success. Any suggestions on how to remove them without breaking them? The spindle nuts are tight all the way out, like an interference fit. I thought I was destroying mine while disassembling them. But I was lucky. Lots of cleanup as the grease was rock solid throughout the grease passages. 10 hrs of cleanup and all was good in the end. The spindle threads into the nuts on both ends. I used a dab of anti seize on the OD of the nuts reassembling the nuts to the A arms.

I needed to get them HOT and use a seriously tough impact gun. They wouldnt budge when i used a breaker bar. Haven't done that. Don't know if I'm going to try. Believe me, I'm not a small weak guy, and I tried with a large impact gun and breaker bar. No luck. But you are saying heat will work? If I do what is worn? The bushings, the spindle or both? Can I then buy new bushings and everything will be ok?
