My Coronavirus purchase – 1969 Datsun 2000

Post by Old Rice »

Hello everyone, my name is Steve and I recently took delivery of this 1969 Datsun 2000. It traveled in good company as it was in closed transport with a new Lamborghini sport utility. This Datsun will join my other one, a 1973 Datsun 240Z.

My first awareness (way back in college) that there was ever such a car named the Datsun 2000 was when I was discussing cars with a friend. I mentioned that I owned a Datsun 240Z (not the one I own now) and I was expecting to have to explain what a 240Z was to him like I usually did with others. But, he surprised me and mentioned how he loved the Z and used to own a Datsun 1600. So, I turned out being the one asking what that car was! He told me how it preceded the Z and there was an even quicker model named the Datsun 2000 that he wished he had. Years later, I would look at pictures of this awesome little car and how it would be a great garage companion to my Z.

The dealership I bought this from did not provide me with any maintenance records and only stated that it had sat for a few years. I will be replacing all the fluids shortly and I have already replaced the clogged fuel filter so I could take it for spin around the block. I will be asking lots of questions no doubt as I try to get things sorted, so please be patient with me!

Since the car is very recognizable with its Martini Racing livery, I am hoping someone here has seen this car before and knows who owned it previously?

Since it has been sitting you need to bleed the brakes ASAP to remove any moisture that may have accumulated. You may save yourself a lot of time and money>

Appreciate the suggestion, that is on the list along with the other fluids.

I just replaced the air filter today and as you can see it too was neglected for a long time. Between the clogged fuel filter and filthy air filter, I am surprised it was able to start and go around the block.

Nice looking car and welcome! Not sure how I feel about the Martini Racing livery on it though. Love seeing it when it’s appropriate but this isn’t one. That said I love the way the center stripe looks but not the side ones. Are they vinyl or were they painted on? What’s your plan for them? It’s your call after all, not mine.

That looks like a really well sorted Roadster, surprised to hear it has been sitting for a while, what a shame not to have that driven and enjoyed! Glad you were able to get it and put it to good use! Where in Florida are you located?

The stripes are vinyl and for the time being I will keep them on. It will help me find my car in a parking lot filled with white on red Datsun 2000's! :smt023

In St John's county and once I have it serviced and feel comfortable with its reliability, I plan drive it just about every weekend, weather permitting. I like to drive my cars!
