SU Float Bowl Leak

Post by woton121 »

I'm trying to track down a leak that seems to only happen when I am taking a hard right hand turn.
I noticed last time I was out driving on the twisties that I would smell fuel and my motor would lag a bit only while in a right hand turn.
I opened the hood to have a look and noticed fuel around the float bowl. Altho it was hard to tell, it didn't appear to be coming from the overflow tubes but from the bowl or lid itself.
I was thinking of two things that may cause that. 1. the lid is not flat and will never seal if so. 2. the float level is too high and fuel is simply spilling out of the tubes, and the lid?
The gaskets are new and not damaged, however, they are very thin. Is there a thicker material out there? I'm not opposed to making my own.

Any suggestions would help on this one guys and thanks in advance!

I have a feeling that, if the bowls were actually leaking at the gasket enough to smell it, you'd have more major issues...like combustion where you don't want it.
The bowls are at atmospheric pressure (unless you have a faulty inlet valve) so unless there is a major problem with your gasket/surfaces, I would check float setting instead. I guess you have to open the bowls to check your floats/valves anyway so, if it were me, I'd check the mating surfaces for cleanliness and finish, then I would run a very very scant amount of aviation form-a-gasket to help the paper gaskets seal, if you feel you need to.

aviation form-a-gasket is good for fuel?

I agree with checking float height.
