Transmission Control

Post by Bungle »

Hi guys,

I've got a little problem with my 4 speed transmission. I was driving the other day and the gear stick literally came free. What's happened is that it seems like the retaining pin (29) for the control arm pin (24) has given way, allowing the control arm pin to slide sideways and thus free the gear stick.

Has anyone ever had anything like this happen before? I know what I need to do is remove the broken retaining pin (how to do this is another question), and replace it with a new one after I've re-aligned the control arm pin - my question is, where can I find another retaining pin?

Also, while I'm at it, the striking pin (21) on mine is awfully loose (making the gear shift action quite 'sloppy'). I think sometime in the past, someone's replaced it with a smaller diameter pin and requisite C clip (22). Again, how do I get my hands on one of these?

Being in Australia it's unlikely I could find a local source as the cars are so rare here, but seeing as the parts are so small, posting from the States wouldn't be a problem.

Here's the diagram which may help what I'm trying to explain.

The parts I'm referring to are circled in red, and have the following numbers:

24 - pin - control arm
21 - pin - striking rod
29 - pin - retaining

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
John

I think these would be avaliable at the local hardware store. The cotter pin and pivot pin are common. That's what I have in my linkage, but not sure if it's correct. Less common is the cir-clip and pin(21 & 22) but places that specialize in nuts and bolts may have them avaliable.

Thanks Steve.

Does anyone have the exact dimensions for these?

I suppose I could figure out a way of measuring the correct diameter of the striking pin - but if anyone has it handy it'd save some hassle!

Another thought is as to whether anyone's got these bits lying around and could sell them to me?

I've sorted the problem out in a different way. It turns out the retaining pin for the control arm pin is jammed in there and there's no way I could get it out (without removing the entire unit from the car).

I went to the hardware store and purchased a 10mm x 70mm high tensile nut and bolt (the control arm pin is 10mm in diameter) - with the shaft being clear of thread to the precise length of the original control arm pin.

It slotted straight in without too much hassle - the only real difference is there being a nut and bolt at either end of the assembly. The set up operates the same way and actually seems a bit more robust than the original set-up.

Just an idea for anyone who has the same problem as I did in future.

Anyway, anyone out there have a measurement for the diameter of the striking rod pin? Would love to know this as I don't have anything to measure against.

Item 21 pin measures .275" diameter.
The other pin I could not get out because it looks as if it might be staked in place with a retaining pin, but it look to be approx .325 diameter.

There is usually wear on the flats of the striking rod and the U-slot of the item 25 which makes for excessive side play.
I took care of the excessive play between the surfaces by placing a U-shaped piece of sleel shim stock (with holes to allow pin 21 to go thru) between these items.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the measurements Ray - I should be able to sort this out now. Cheers, John
