New Roadster Owner!

Hello there!

Bid on and won a 1969 2000 earlier today on BAT.

The scary part is that I did so sight unseen (I'm in NY and the car is in Idaho) but car was single owner so am hoping for no big surprises!

Does anyone know a Datsun mechanic in the Boise area that works on Roadsters? My plan is to drive the car back to NY when the weather warms up but would like to have it looked over well before making such a long trip.

That's an ambitious 2500 mile road trip for a 50+ year old car you just bought. Hope it works out and hope you have good weather. If you happen to drive this way, I'm near Philadelphia.

Planning to do it over around 10 days so I can keep hours to 3-4 per day max. Of course this will all depend on what the mechanic says once he sees it! Just a dream of an adventure for now...if not, onto a flatbed.

Sounds like an adventurous trip. But you are from New York City so I doubt you scare easily
A Roadster owner named Scott took an incredible road trip with some amazing photos along the way a few years ago. A very cool one was going thru Times Square in his car. You might find it interesting, link at the bottom.

Welcome, if possible spend some time on the phone with the previous owner and let them know what you intend to do. Hopefully they can tell you what hesitation they might have with that plan, if any. That’s a heck of a Shakedown run! But I understand the thrill of doing it. I did it 20+ years ago from Los Angeles to North Carolina via the southern route through Dan Diego with a friend. But I did know the owner and I had driven the car. But I didn’t know anything like I know today. I can only say the car got me there but knowing what I know today I probably wouldn’t have done it without more prep.

I'd post up your route plans and route on the forum and meet some other owners along the way. You may need some spare parts or an extra hand. If you get jammed up in NC there are a few of us around. It's a small community but a good one.

The apparently original radiator hoses indicate that it needs a thorough mechanical refreshing before undertaking a long drive. I suggest having a plan B in place in the event of a major breakdown, and don't forget your AAA card.

Sounds like a great road trip. I highly recommend Hwy 20 from Boise going west rather than I-80. I drove it last May and had most roads to myself. There’s a couple roadster owners in Iowa, Wisconsin and in Chicago if you need a meet up along the way...

Plan B is a good idea, I had AAA for my trip, and used them 3 times! (Gas - Gauge didn't work and miscalculated distance :-0, Ignition condenser failed one morning and one Tow for a frozen front wheel bearing -no metal cap behind the decorative wheel center cap!). Also the idea of planning the route and having the local Roadster owners along the way on "stand-by" is excellent. I did not have this list when I made the trip and it would have been invaluable!!
BTW, AAA sent me a letter afterward and said I could not use it for the Roadster again for the next 12 months!

I would say Roadsters are among the most reliable cars of their time. If it makes it the first 50 miles I bet it will make it all the way. I did 1,000 miles in my '69 2000 as its first real shakedown run and it made it! (not without hiccups, but northing that was the car's fault;)
