67 2000... coming home after 21 years!

Post by cole455 »

I believe many on the board are familiar with srl152. It was a car that had been frame off restored and reassembled by my dad in the late 80’s. We drove it to shasta 8 years in a row (winning awards) and was fairly well-known on the west coast. Anyways, mom and dad were downsizing stuff for a cross-country move and 152 was one of the cars sold. Fortunately, it went to a great owner, Greg Valazza, and was eventually painted by Ross (along with additional maintenance) and returned to its factory color, 666 silver.

Fast forward 21 years, Greg decided to sell, so I bought it! I still need to transport it home to N.C. (or store it and drive to shasta), but she’ll be headed home sometime in the coming months!

The picture of it grey was with me in 1990! The silver paint is as it sits today.

So, there is a story with those tires! Upon restoration completion, the tires had zero miles on them but were somewhat aged by now. This was the only year we towed a car down to Shasta (and it was this car). The belts snaked and the right front tire blew out (it was towed on a towbar). We limped into Kelley tire in Millersburg, OR (I believe) just as they were closing and dad bought the closest sized tire in stock that would fit so we could continue on our trip. These were Kelley 185/70 R14’s; they made the trip successfully in 1990 and eventually made their way onto my 1600 in 1995! Good times!

Amazing that this was posted today, as yesterday I was at work, bored, and did a web search for Datsun Roadster. Gregs add came up, and here it is the next day and it's sold back. Came full circle!

Full circle indeed! We finalized everything last week, I’m just slow at updating I suppose. While it’s not quite the same car anymore, it’s obviously a bit more correct and a very nice car.

I am glad it is making its way home. When Greg called me to inform that it was for sale, the first thing I did was phone your Dad !!!! Susan and I always enjoyed staying with your family in Lake Oswego on our way to and from Shasta. Ironic that you restored your 67.5 2000 to look like your Dads 152 and now its back. Maybe Coleman senior can restore 155(??) and get the fleet to east coast car shows.

So, in a rushed attempt, I made my way to Seattle over the weekend to pickup the car from Greg’s, as his house is now on the market and I didn’t want to get stuck having to move the car in winter weather.

Anyways, I drove the car to gasworks park for loading and trailered it to Portland where it is now stored in anticipation of driving it to Shasta this summer. I plan on making a couple trips to Portland this spring to get it ready for the event. Aside from being dirty and needing to replace an insulator/gasket it seems perfect!

Stay tuned for more...

Very Cool, that must be a great feeling having that old car back... I often think if I could ever go back to my older cars, but theres so many cars I want to own in my life that Id have to be a millionaire to keep em all.

Car looks great!
