**KNOCK-OFF SPINNER CENTER CAPS Post Pics here***

Post by sdb8100 »

I love the added vintage/classic appearance that a spinner style center cap gives to our cars and others of that era. I know that there are a lot of options out there aftermarket/ebay/etc. so I'm curious to see a collection of what wheels people have paired spinners with and also, how the spinners are constructed and attached to the wheel/cap.

Thanks to all who participate.

Spin on a hub attached to the wheel.

To clarify, these spinners are threaded onto a hub that is part of the wheel?

It is threaded on a hub that is behind the wheel, but is not part of the wheel itself.

The original knockoff center nuts held the wheel onto a splined tapered hub shaft. It was 1 center nut that took the place of the lug nuts we use today.
The knockoff style of center nut that Howard posted above is for aesthetics, to emulate the look of the old style splined spindle hub while keeping all the safety and practicality of a 4 or 5 lug hub.

I had a set of a Barracuda I owned years ago.
the hub was welded to a sheet metal flange that fit over the lugs. So, you put on the hub, then the wheel with lug nuts which held the hub in place and then the spinner scredwed into a threaded hole in the hub.
A bit of Loktite was needed to hold the spinner from unscrewing.

Gorilla makes some 5 lug versions but last I looked they didn't offer a 4 lug version. Too bad because I loked the look, especially with nice lug nuts and chromed wheels.
I think a cool unique look would be to take the Topy wheel centers, graft them to 6" wide rims, have them plated and then use the "knock off" spinners.
Probably only cost 4 times what a set of new VTO's costs.

Interesting that you say that...

I have Topy wheel centers that I added to 6" barrells...I am painting the centers body color with a chrome trim rim. My plan is to add a spinner style center cap and I'm figuring how to accomplish that and what style of spinner looks good.

I like those. What center cap did you find to fit?

Saw the post title and thought "Oh, no, you can't be serious." Was thinking about those wheels with the spinning spokes - you know, the ones that keep spinning even when the vehicle is stopped at the light.

Now, if you had said "knockoff wheels"....

The 2-bar knock-off spinners are from E-hubcap. The center cap “tower” came with another set of wheels I had and I drilled a center hole to mount the spinner to it. I also created a plastic adapter to fill a slight gap b/t the two parts...not necessary but I did it anyway.
