'68 SPL311 Timing question
New to working on cars, limited to no previous knowledge. Trying to trouble shoot my engine. I see that the '68 SPL311 timing is set at 16degrees BTDC at 600rpm, and this is adjusted by rotating the distributor. The closest I can get is about right at 15. The distributor can not be rotated more. Is there something else I should look at, or is this ok?

Re: '68 SPL311 Timing question
There could be two issues going on. Either the plate with the pointer needs to be rotated, or if its fully rotated, the distributor needs to be pulled, the stand needs to be pulled, and the drive gear needs to advance 1 tooth. (If this is the case you will need to rotate the pointer plate back, and readjust everything.

Re: '68 SPL311 Timing question
You can see P/N 22 has two screw clamps: one is P/N 23,24 and the other is adjacent the pointer on the plate.
I set the rear clamp when the distributor is timed at ~16deg advance and use the pointer clamp to fine tune the advance as the engine and fuel will require.
Nissanman, just trying to help.

Re: '68 SPL311 Timing question
I’m correct on my timing numbers though? I pulled them from a Chiltons manual (which covers all datsuns from 62-71 or something). Using numbers for e-code engine (which I think is correct).
Also I appreciate that diagram. That really helps.

Re: '68 SPL311 Timing question
Yes 16deg BTDC is correct. I'm, by coincidence, going through this exact exercise atm.
I'm setting up the timing with engine off to fire at ~16deg BTDC.
Clamping the pointer plate so that the pointer is at the 0 mark.
Then further adjustments are made using the front screw and adjusting the pointer to A or R as required.
Usually, you can advance the timing quite a lot depending on the fuel you are using.
