Re: Body work and paint for you do it yourself'ers
I buy from the local guy. Compared to what I have in the rest of the car, a few hundred bucks is not significant.
Personally, if it's not a show car, I like urethane catalized single stage.
Tough as hell, easy to apply. Sets pretty quick and as long as you get on any flaws within a few days it's easy to fix.
Any of my work is done in a two car garage. The more coats of paint, the more chances for something to go wrong.

I found a quart of acrylic lacquer red oxide primer at my local Napa auto parts. I just cant change my ways lol. expensive, but not epoxy expensive.
Our local Napa also carries Martin Senour automotive paints.
I used some Martin Senour single stage enamel back in ‘85 on a panel repair. Looked great, And matched perfectly. Didnt even buff it.

Re: Body work and paint for you do it yourself'ers
Bob, I have been using paint from the Nason line by Dupont. I have been getting it all; epoxy base primer, filler, spray on filler, primer surfacer, base coat clear coat, and all of the reducers and activators, from a local store. You can see my car earlier in this thread. The Nason products are a lower end automotive quality so they cost a lot less than the top shelf automotive paints. A suggestion: before painting set up a lot of lights in order to see your surface, then double the number of lights.

+1 on the lights. I had so many lights, I thought I'd need sunglasses when I painted. WRONG, you'll need some both low and high. Some hitting the middle helps too helps

But in , when in the winter ,when everyone was playing real bumper cars, the work was piled up the putty /primer dust cloud in the closed up shop ( 10 degrees outside) was emence and spot painting had to be done in the open
To keep up ,it doesnt take much to cause the harm that will do you in ...is my point

Help needed! I'm trying to get the paint code for a 664 (red). Went to the paint store and they couldn't find a code to cross reference it to. They told me to check the forum and see if anyone had a Dupont code

Re: Body work and paint for you do it yourself'ers
Hello again, I'm almost ready to spray and have a few questions before I drop change on materials. This weekend I hope to POR the floors and maybe the trunk. After that, I plan on spaying high build primer and finish the blocking, then sealer, then color. Still undecided on BC/CC or Acrylic Enamel but leaning towards BC/CC. I plan on painting it Silver Metallic, I hear a lot about painting a car in parts with metallic may not match up when put back together. My goal is a nice car, not a Barrett Jackson, Bitchen Rides, show car.
Question is; I have the car apart, should I;
1. Paint the car in pieces then re-assemble, I would imagine paint the underside of hood, trunk lid, doors, let it dry flip it and paint the exterior panels.
or
2. Paint the inside, trunk, jambs, then re-assemble and paint the exterior all at one time.
Pebbles, I went through your link, but couldn't tell if you pulled it back apart before color, did you go with single or 2stage.
Dad's, how did that coating store paint hold up, I like their prices.
I can get Nason, HOK, Sherwin, and Valspar locally for about $600 for BB/CC kit not including the primer.
Thanks, I'm getting close, so any suggestion is appreciated.
