Gas tank questions

Post by johnscf »

I dropped the tank out of my 68 2000 to clean and seal and I noticed that it has two lines coming out of the front near the center. This looks like the tank pictured in carpartsmanual.com as the Fuel Tank (evapo) However my car does not have the reservoir tank shown as item 16 in the parts manual picture and it also has its vent tube located on top of the tank close to the center beside the hole for the sending unit. The vent tube then ran along the top of the tank to the inlet tube. This location and path is just like the picture for Fuel Tank (Exc. Evapo) Was the 68 tank a combination of the two different tanks shown? I have tried to attach a picture.

The second line is the return line.

One is supply line and one is return line. If I remember right the bigger line is the return line. You can tell by looking in the tank through the sender hole. The supply will go all the way to the bottom while the return is noticeable shorter. Some has most likely blocked off the return line if it not hooked up to anything.

I assumed one line was a return but was the 68 tank a one or two year item with a return line but with the vent tube in the middle instead of on the side like the later (Evapo) tank version? and if so does that mean it didn't have a reservoir tank in the trunk. My 1970 1600 has the reservoir tank and the vent tube coming up on the side rather than in the center.

Your tank is like the one in my 69. It's my understanding that only the 70s had the evapo tank.

Looks just like my 68, the supply side was completely clogged when I first got the car.

Any way to unclog the line? i Just dropped my tank as well to get it cleaned out but the line is so clogged it wouldn't matter if the tank was clean...

Some have had success with various chemicals. I had to resort to cutting the bottom inch off of the pickup tube on mine. I then slipped a tight fitting fuel hose over the tube in order to reach the bottom of the tank. A last resort for sure. Hopefully you can find something to dissolve it.

I think I have heard of people using a speedometer cable on a drill.

Classic tube bends replacement fuel lines for roadsters.I bought a set for my 69 and the fit was quite good.Might be a bit pricey for some folks, but in my opinion, was well worth the money.I think these days roadster owners are used to parts sticker shock.
