Stalling question...

Post by oscilloscope »

Hey everyone...

Tonight I started my car (67 1600) for the first time in a couple of months. It started and idled fine but when I was driving it around the block, it would stall on me when I let off the gas like when coming to a stop light. It has never done this before. I ended up heel/toeing it back to the house.

When I got in the garage I blipped it a bunch of times by hand at the carbs and it wasn't stalling as bad, but it was hesitating and acting like it might stall as it was coming down in revs.

Oh, also I was getting popping from the exhaust as I was driving around which I only had once a while ago when I was running too lean.

A few items of note - I have carbs rebuilt 2 years ago, a GB EI Dizzy, 6 month new fuel pump and fresh gas.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Matthew...

On my r16, I have had similar syptoms when the car hadn't warmed enough before a drive. Did you choke the car for a few minutes prior to driving? I'm guessing you probably did this...but, just in case...

No, it was fully warmed up. I drove it for about 20 minutes and it was still doing it.

Thanks for the reply, though!

are you sure you are not running lean? I would get a popping from my car when I was lean from the carbs though. Your idle may be too low?

You might want to check to see if one of your choke cables might be hanging up on the carb. The cable end should be down inside the mount on the carb.... Bill
