EI Conversion

Post by Fairlady5150 »

I'd be interested in thoughts on Electronic Ignition conversions for my early R16. What products did you use, and did they deliver noticeable improvement? Ease of installation? Things / products to avoid, etc.

IMHO, the converted Nissan EI distributor is one of the best upgrades you can do to the car for overall driving and reliability. Since your R is early, there will be no removal of smog stuff etc or a change in your advance curve, so the change may not be as significant. Other options are the Petronix conversion which I have no experience with, but others may chime in. Unless your engine is modified or you're planning to do some serious engine upgrades, a 123 Dizzy or a conversion to a megajolt crank fired system is probably overkill and requires a lot more tuning effort and understanding for sure with the MJ). The 123 Dizzy allows you to create your own advance curve via a cell phone app which is nice, but since you're stock there shouldn't be any need to pull advance out at certain points. You could add an MSD type spark box to your stock system as an upgrade, which will also work with the Nissan EI. I ran a Jacobs Pro-street system combined with the EI for years, worked great.

I used this little kit: -

Electronignition4cyl.jpg

It is intended for the negative ground SP[L]311 but because it is an electrically isolated unit I have it running on my Positive ground SP310.
Very well made and available on eBay now and then.

Nissanman, can you provide details of anything you had to do to make it work on a positive ground car?

I installed the East Coast Roadster EI Distributor about 3 years ago and could not be happier with the upgrade. It's an easy installation and there is an obvious improvement in performance. On top of that, my '67 is getting 30 mpg now, which is a much larger improvement than I expected. I'll take it!

spl310
The standard positive ground '65 ignition normally has negative connected to the coil, i.e. switched to positive ground via the ignition points.
I provided a positive to the coil since the ignition box [designed for a negative ground car]sends out a negative pulse to the coil for firing.
