Radiator Support Braces-Resolved

Post by akaloosey »

Was there more than one radiator support brace offered from 68-70? I have a 69 SRL. When i acquired the car the stock radiator was unmounted and the support braces were MIA.

I ordered a pair of used support braces from a seller on Ebay but when I went to mount the radiator the holes don't match up. My radiator flange mount holes measure exactly 17" apart. None of the holes on the support braces I got are 17" apart from each other. Seller said came off a 1970 1600 but the parts catalogs list the same number for all years so I assumed they all interchanged.

I guess I will just drill some extra holes into these braces but I am still puzzled why it didn't work.

Are you sure the radiator is OEM for a 2000?

A picture of what you have would help. Pretty sure the radiator supports were pretty standard. I could be wrong but without a picture it is hard to tell.

BTW you owe me. I was dressed and ready to go to a wedding when the bride caught me fussing in the engine compartment of the car. A lot of noise and none of it came from the engine.

Yes. The 68 and early 69 used the cam and lever steering box with a wider radiator. The later 69 and 70 used a recirculating ball steering box and a narrower radiator. I don't have dimensions.

Thanks for everyones input and sorry to Rick for interfering with wedding plans. Yikes! These were the supports I got in the mail. Look like the standard support braces to me however the 3rd hole from the left and second hole from the right are not the 17 inches needed so I am guessing there was a different version of braces offered even though i see no different part #'s from the catalog.

I already sandblasted and powder coated these since this photo so I wll probaby just drill an extra hole between the 2nd and 3rd to achieve the spacing needed as I am nearly positive the radiator is stock with the fill neck protruding in the upper left side and the gold NIHON sticker, etc...

Will mark this one as resolved. So there are slight differences between the years for these supports but they can be resolved by test mounting and drilling out new holes if needed for proper mounting.
