Dash removal without removing windshield?

Post by ppeters914 »

Okay, I thought you had to remove the windshield frame before you could remove the dash. Then I saw this pic from the Drunk Monkey Mechanic:

Did I misunderstand, or..........??? :?

Hey thats my car!

Actually we couldnt figure out how to take the windshield out, so the dash is actually ripped out... (the foam thing) it was beat to hell anyways and i am planning on replacing it. The dash plate (thing that holds the gauges) came out without the windshield needing to be removed.

Just so you know...I have a 70 1600 and I did replace my dash without removing the windshield. One of the worst ideas I have ever thought of...not only were the 6 screws near impossible to get in I will probably have to remove the windshield in the future to get it tighter. Maybe this doesn't affect you but I wanted to throw it out there in case anybody else was thinking the same "bad " thoughts.

It is much easier to take the dash out with the winshield out, but I have taken one out and replaced it with the windshield in place. Just used one of those right-angle phillpis head screwdrivers to get at the fasteners.

Edit: That's a low-windshield car - I did it on a high-window car.

Being new to Roadsters, I never thought about removing the windshield before removing the dash. I didn't have any trouble removing it or replacing it. I guess I had the right tools and help.

On the early cars the windshield/frame assembly is so easy to remove that I don't see any reason to kill yourself trying to get the dash out without removing it. The only tricky part is finding those two nuts under the dash the first time.

does anyone have a pic of those two nuts? the only ones we found seemed to hold the wiper motor in place and were almost dead center in the car...

That's a tall order. They are about 1/3 and 2/3 across the bottom of the frame. The two studs are attached to the bottom of the frame and go through the body. I have never seen one installed, you have to feel for them.

There is a 67 1/2 windshield on eBay right now that gives you an idea where the two lower front bolts can be found. If I were more computer literate I would just post the photo, but I also didn't want someone suing me for stealing their photos. Anyway, here is the link

I tried removing the dash before removing the windshield, on the 67.5 2000. Trust me remove the windshield first.
