First Oil Change after rebuild?

Post by nismou20 »

So Engine is breaking in, did the 20 min at 2krpms and driven about 10 miles and no smoke. These are cast rings that should quickly seat but when should I do my first oil change? I added zinc additive with 10x30 Dino for the break in.

Oil is cheap. I'd change at 100 mi, then 1000. If nothing sparkles in the oil, you're good.

I changed it after that initial break in 30 min.
Then again after 2-300 miles something like that. Then not too long after that as I was driving at various speeds for the break in. Maybe overkill but not harmful.

I would think about pulling the oil pan off, you will be shocked on how much machining sludge stays in the pan.

I’ve always done the initial oil/filter change before 500 Miles. If you have the means, wouldn’t hurt to cut open the filter and make sure there is not too much particulate in there. A little is to be expected, but no chunkies!

In addition, Attempt to accelerate through the gears and decelerate through the gears for the first hundred miles.
Change the break in oil and filter if the car is going to sit for a few weeks.

I too have done 500 miles, with careful acceleration and deceleration once I feel that everything is good, progressively to 6000 rpms, then oil change and good to go. A 7.5 quart pan has some influence on that... good thing is more oil; bad thing is more oil to buy! Start with a very clean block etc and that helps a lot.
