Tranny/Gearbox doesn't meet driveshaft

Post by Gornal »

I have just replaced my engine and tranny (on the same mount point as last time) and my driveshaft. When I go to bolt the two together, there is a good 1/2-1inch gap which I can't work out why. I have attached photos but unsure why they don't meet up. Is there a way to adjust either so they meet?

Any expert advice is well received!

thanks

You may have pushed the driveshaft too far into the tranny. Pull it out some.

Yes, there's a lot of extra shaft length...

If I remember correctly, it's the splined front section of the drive shaft that is adjustable. There has to be some fore and aft movement of the drive shaft in order to accommodate the lateral movement of the rear axle.

As others have said, the front part of the shaft is splined and slides into the front yoke. The shaft needs to move fore and aft in the yoke. I usually bolt the yoke to the transmission first, be sure to apply grease to the splines, push drive shaft splined end into the yoke and then bolt the shaft to the rear differential. Some of my cars have a rubber piece on the yoke to help seal the splines jn the yoke...to keep grease in and water out I assume.

It's common to mark the drive shaft flange postion on the transmission and differential flanges before removal to be suure it goes back in the same way, for balance.

It’s very important that you time the drive shaft, or your car will shake.

How does one reindex the driveshaft to trans once its been pulled? I did not mark it when I removed the engine. Is that what you are referring to?

The is O stamped on the yoke and a matching one on the drive shaft. Line them up and your good to go.

All - thanks for all the support...I shall now check to see if I was fortunate enough to reindex (unwittingly) or perhaps undo and reposition.
