Single Brake Reservoir vs Dual Brake Reservoir Master Cylinder

Post by bradleygt »

Looking for any suggestion or comments. On a 1966 Datsun 1600 changing front calipers to Volvo calipers. The instruction in the Tech Wiki suggest to use a Datsun 280 Z dual master cylinder. After doing a search regarding single vs dual I don't see why the single shouldn't work just fine without any complications. Plus on this 66 there isn't any room to install a dual master cylinder unless someone has found one that would work without mod the firewall.Any input is appreciated.
Thanks Brad Johnson

I used the stock (dual) master on the '69. It works fine.
I didn't see any reason to change it.

Agree, I don't know why anyone would recommend the 280 master since it is designed for a vac booster. Switching to 7/8 or 1" diameter will significantly lower your line pressure actually making the volvo calipers less effective.. I think you are better off with the stock single reservoir which will keep your hydraulic pressure high.

From the safety perspective the roadster dual master doesn't really add too much in a real-world braking emergency- Anyone who has ever had a OEM Dunlop front caliper leak and tried to stop on just the rear brakes knows why I say this. (The parking brake is equally effective lol)
