Upgrades starting this week preparing for CRR rewind 2019.

New header, heat shield, intake spacers.
Swapping comp oil pan for dentable stock pan.
New starter, fuel pump and alternator to relegate old one as spares.
A weekend J-O-B

Oh, hoping that trans leak is simple to address have a full gasket set for the 5 speed.

The new KRD rear end is so sweet.

Have only put 20 miles on the new assembly. Braking is improved and the lower revs at speed are nice. Those were the motivators for the change. The car drives same as far as I could tell yet I need to give it a hard run on Peachy Canyon Rd to make strong comparisons. Will be doing that in a couple weeks when I get through the upgrades.

I put about 5 miles on MrGuts rear axle, when Garm owned the car, here..

It drives very similar to the RX7 rears. The slightly lower gearing was a delight with the U motor that begs for revs to go anywhere..

I had a very interesting discussion this weekend with Sam Smith, who writes for Road and Track, and races with us in VARA. We were actually talking about my brother's BMW, but the discussion turned to rear differentials.. So the conclusion Sam came to exactly mirrored my own. The stock clutch type LSDs work fine. But they do not suffer heat well. Sam said that in one weekend he could burn the fluid and destroy the clutches, even when rebuilt with stronger springs.

The Giken units have stronger, better clutches. They lasted most of the summer.

Now, there are very few of us, who are going to fry a LSD in a weekend. I might be one of the few. My RX7 rear needs a rebuild to get the clutches working right again.. But then again, it has over 50k very hard miles on it.

Just don't put a welded diff in the car. Everyone seems to agree that welded diffs suck. I like welded diffs, but none of the real racers like them..lol

Well, what a day. I got to meet Spike's owner after a 4 hour drive there. Kevin, You should change the forum to "Spike" or "Kevin's' 1969 project" Because man, you are doing awesome with the car! I'm so glad we were able to go for a ride, such a cool road.
He can really drive the car hard. It is the most rock solid car I've ridden in, no rattles, squeaks, bumps felt awesome. I notice the hood doesn't move up and down like mine does
You really know your stuff!
Managed to get a good picture, the video not so much... lol Hope no one gets sick watching me try to film. Audio is not the best on my phone, It felt great to be in a roadster again.

Motor is out and cleanup begins before bolting on new starter, header, carb-intake spacers, and getting this bad trans leak fixed.
Trans is standing over a cookie sheet to evaluate source.

Could it be a rear main oil seal leak? Those are quite common.

Nope. Its trans oil for certain. Viscosity and color. Collects in bell housing

With the O ring and front seal replaced on the trans, I moved onto tidying up the engine implementing upgrades.
New header
New starter
New carb spacers
Proper heat shield
Checked torque on all internals
Swapped out comp oil pan for stock in the case of rough roads on the #coastalrangerally #dwarally
