Fender mirror installation... the door mirror on the 67.5 is an ugly thing held on with sheet metal screws... popped it off and added Nissan fender mirrors from Ross @ Sports Imports:

Actually are functional and look great. Will get the door holes plugged and filled
Rob,

Those are sharp! And, unlike the door mounted, are consistent with the time honoured recommendations by Talbot (Berlin) for selecting the best position for side mirrors:

“The mirrors should … allow vision through the areas normally cleared by the wipers in inclement weather. They may be placed on the doors, however, this position normally requires the driver to turn his head much more.”

Ross may need to increase his inventory after other folks view these.

I remember that when I was driving my '67.5 in '69-'72 I that the door mounted mirror tended to loosen just from the normal closing of the door.

I like the electrical trouble shoot on the fly set-up. Although it could, I suppose be taken for distracted driving.

Made a mini console for the rear of my center console to hold the switches for my heated seats :smt004 Sorry about the sideways photos, they usually load correctly!

Oh, we're not on the fly yet... there is a dogs breakfast of splices, electrical tape, jumpers, odd relays, cut ends, direct 12V taps and multiple connections to the fuse block that shouldn't be there... took a break from sorting wires to put the mirrors on, at least that was a straightforward job...

Lorna, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I was wondering how you were doing with those fronts. You had not responded after the part about different inner and outer cylinders. How many new ones did you get?

only needed one new one .(knock on wood ) they seem to be doing fine being cleaned up nicely .. corotion had just started to build up inside calipers ..
I had different numbers on all sets of brakes , I thought , but after looking better only one of three set of numbers were different . (I have 3 sets of numbers on each , two of the three sets match a twin = 2 & 2 matching up inside and out side brakes ) . there's a third random number that was different on each caliper confusing me at first . . I have one more shot to try to resolve my issue with my steering . if I'm lucky it'll be fixed today. if not , I'll be back for help .. so wish me luck.. third times a charm eh ! working in the rain stinks . cold , steel , and hands don't mix.

Yesterday I took advantage of warm weather and wire brushed my radiator, fan shroud, and gas tank, and applied phosphoric acid to the steel parts. They are now ready for priming. Today I repacked and resealed the front wheel bearings and continued with my sound deadening with the installation of ice and water shield. I am nearly done with that project.

Took my car out to the DMV to swap out the Cali plates for Oregon plates. Got special interest plates so it is a one time fee, no yearly registration anymore

Removed my new starter with less than two hundred miles on it. Apparently if your starter doesn't disengage and you don't notice it and go buzzing through the gears it completely destroys the insides. Who da thunk dat!! Surprisingly, I spent more time worrying about what a pain it was going to be to remove it than it actually took to remove it

Hopefully it didn't mess up your ring gear! Hey Mike, tell me about these heated seats! I have no heater in my car anymore but I do have a powerful GM alternator that can power anything. My wife is a petite little thing that gets cold easily (I can be in a Tshirt and she will be wrapped in a blanket) and we love the heated seats in the Z3. Is this a cover or inside the seat?

Greg, the ring gear look "ok", a little burring on the very edge, but I don't think it will hurt anything. The seat heaters came from eBay, and they go under the seat covers. They are basically just rectangular pads with heating wires that run through them. They have double sided tape on the backside and you just tape them to the foam before installing the seat covers. I'll let you know how effective they are once I finish wiring them up. Obviously our wife's are related, as I can sit around motionless and shirtless while wiping the sweat off my brow while Karen huddles under a blanket while wearing a hoodie :smt017

as promised... started on the red bumper restoration project...

Car as purchased last Feb (yes, it is the infamous red bumper 1600 on Bring a Trailer from 2017):

Image

Pulled the front bumper two weeks ago and had my paint guy strip the red ... I couldn't remove with the tools I had... sanding was taking forever.

Talked to the only remaining chroming shop in our province... they quoted $ 1000.00 per bumper sight unseen!

So, we had a Z car club garage project tour yesterday, so I brought the front bumper to one of our guys who has got into powdercoating. We did a little sanding prep to even out the scratches from the paint removal, and he did a powdercoat application and baked it with his portable heat lamps while we helped and took a gander at his 1978 Datsun 280Z undergoing a full resto-mod build. Whole procedure from application of the powder to baking and cooling took an hour.

Bolted it back up today:

He has the overriders and will PC those this week. The overall look is great, when you get up close you see the duller finish and slightly textured effect of the powdercoat, but from 10' away, it looks great.

Rear bumper is currently being stripped of the red paint... will do the same when I get it back.
