The Quick/Small/(Stupid?) Question Thread-take 2

I’m having some trouble getting the rear differential out.

Drums are off, axles are disconnected and I’ve slid them out a few inches. The differential has slid to the end of the studs but still seems to be hung up on something. I’m guessing the axles need to come out just a little bit more but I think I’ve maxed them out without disconnecting more stuff.

Any tips or do I need to disconnect a brake line or something?

I don't think the diff would move at all if the axles were interfering with removal. When I pull the diff I have always disconnected the hydraulic lines and plugged them and disconnected the parking brake.

I think you have to pull the axles about 4" or more. Looking at a pic of the diff, it looks like you could pull the axles out of the spider gears and move the diff maybe an inch or less before the bearing blocks hang up on the axles.
Sounds like the axles have to come out further.

bummer, I didnt want to disconnect the brake lines, but it seems like its the only way... Just one more thing to do to get the car back on the road.

While adjusting my door a bolt broke in the hinge too chassis $#@! How much meat is in the metal behind the hinge? Is a hele coil the best option?
I destroyed the bolt in the removal process and now my hole is slightly bigger. # should of left that door alone

The plate inside the A post is, I believe, a little thicker than the hinge. I would try a Heli-coil I have used them many times with success.

One more small/stupid question......how do you reset the trip pedometer?

Not certain about your 67.5 but on our high windshield cars, there is a small knob to the right of the steering column that when twisted will roll the trip meter back to zero.

Make sure the car is standing still when you try to reset it - it it's rolling, you will damage the reset and your trip odometer will not work again.

Thank you, both. I'll look for that. Currently trip and odometer aren't working ( maybe PO reset while rolling). I was hoping by resetting trip I could get both rolling again. However, nothing ever that easy ....

don't KNOW this but see potential danger of door alignment. Since the 'plate' s a captive one, that slides in the a-pillar, if the helicoil is too big, you might run the risk of screwing up alignment.

Perhaps overkill suggestion, is to align door just using the 4/3 bolts or 3/4 bolts, depending upon which plate is damaged, THEN you can helicoil - IF you need to. This way, you can be sure that the helicoil won't interfere with alignment.

I may be being overcautious, but just a thought. You might find that you don't need it anyway, if it interferes.

Frankly, I would think that tapping it slightly bigger, would be a better solution. And indeed, retapping thread might even work.

Peter, I started to type this suggestion in my response then deleted it thinking that it might be too involved. What I was going to suggest is removing the door, (I Have had my doors off and on at least a dozen times in the last four years), And removing the hinge from the door and bolting it onto the A post. The hinge could then be used as a guide while drilling for the tap. This would insure alignment. I took a look at the captive plate and it looks like only 4mm thick, so I think that the harder steel of a Helicoil would be beneficial.
