Can we move this cable???
This question may have been answered but I didn’t find anything while searching...
Has anyone out there moved their accelerator cable to a different location to where it does not hang over the valve cover? I mean am I the only one who wishes they could open their hood and see a clean valve cover with no cable running over it?
By the way yes I know about the slack needed for cable and I’m sure about the angle and such... but I’m just curious if anyone has rigged it to be able to be off the valve cover. I was watching a show the other night and they actually were able to flip the assembly upside down and reroute the cable to make it look “cleanerâ€

Re: Can we move this cable???
I think it could be done.
Toss the underhood firewall pivot arm and cables. Rin a new cable thru the firewall straight off the throttle to a bellcrank mounted to the manifold. Run a rod from the bell crank to the carb linkage and you are done.

careful to stay far away from the exhaust manifold.

How will you design a throttle response curve into the design? Have you considered drive-ability issues of a linear throttle, assuming that the throttle response will be linear after the modifications. Come to think of it, with the way the cable guide is mounted on the butterfly shaft, it could be the opposite of linear.

Re: Can we move this cable???
So the reason for my question wasn’t so much “if†it could be done but more of a “has anyone been successful in doing it†kind of question. Really with the right skills, patience, and resources I feel like practically anything can be possible with car stuff - hey even Doc got the Delorean to fly! But in all reality if I were to attempt this project it would be way way down the road from now. But I am still curious if any member here has actually done this conversion.

Re: Can we move this cable???
The option I went when I was fiddling with Motorcycle Carbs was to extend the acc Rod by about 6 inches slotting the top and feeding the cable thru the firewall just above the shelf. The acc pedal vertical arm is connected to horizontal shaft by a nut on left side. I wanted more of a direct link to the carbs so had a about a 6 inch rod welded to the top of the acc arm. The only caveat was drilling a 1/4 in hole just above the shelf at firewall. You might find a way to feed the cable thru the grommet hole above the shelf where the choke cable goes thru too. But then you still have to deal with the bell crank at mani.

Prob best not to monkey with this. There is really not a good reason to alter it//. If you do, there is a pretty good chance it will wind up in the "sins of previous owners" thread..JMHO

Re: Can we move this cable???
Yeah I’m not looking to touch this now and honestly I probably won’t even try in the future but I was quite curious if anyone has attempted and been successful. More of an inquiry than anything else.
Plus I’m in the process of installing this sweet new exhaust kit once it comes in the mail hahaha. Super excited JT!

Just thought of this thread when I found this picture. Lots of other stuff going on too, but the throttle is no longer on the valve cover

Re: Can we move this cable???
I am also a bike mechanic and there is a 90 degree cable pulley application that is common on bicycle rear shifters that could retrofit here since the cables are similar size.
With a custom bracket I think you could run the cable off the firewall, in parallel to the valve cover (instead across it) and turn it 90 degrees at the current cable stop using the pulley and onto the existing throttle shaft. Everything that controls the throttle response today stays in place, you just change the routing.

Re: Can we move this cable???
If you zoom in, it looks like the throttle cable runs across the rear of the cam cover, turns 180 and runs back to an arm connected to the pivot shaft driving two arms with turnbuckles connecting to the carb throttle arms.
I assume it was done to avoid the NO2 plumbing. It moves the cable out of the middle of the cam cover but since the initial hope was esthetics, seems to miss the mark.
Doesn't Lokar make something that could word pretty easily?

Re: Can we move this cable???
I saw that too. But it did make me think why couldn’t it be cut thru the firewall and then continue at that same angle while still using their method?greydog wrote: ↑Wed Oct 24, 2018 12:11 am If you zoom in, it looks like the throttle cable runs across the rear of the cam cover, turns 180 and runs back to an arm connected to the pivot shaft driving two arms with turnbuckles connecting to the carb throttle arms.
