Mag wheel repair

Post by zetec311 »

Anybody have luck repairing old Magnessium Wheels? I found a pair i really like for sale but it has hairline cracks at the lug holes. radiating from the center bore to the lig holes. Not sure if the cracks are due to age or impact, doesnt look very oxidized either.

Magnesium has a history of getting brittle when it gets old. I would not mess with cracked magnesium unless it was just for show.

Mike M is exactly right. Show only, and put them on when it's parked..

It makes sense for an owner of an Italian classic with original wheels to go through the commitment it takes to safely run a set of vintage mags.... yearly die-pens etc etc. For our cars, not so much.

Once they start to crack they are scrap metal. This is one of the properties of magnesium wheels. They work harden and stress crack. A proper repair would be to melt them down and cast new wheels.

These wheels look like Watanabe's and can be found, rather than carrying on with these.
1965 Nissan Silvia (CSP311) for total restoration
1978 260Z finally on the road (Rebello 3.2L)

Does the car still have the 2 piece empis? Those are extremely rare, and the one thing I regret letting go with the car.
I remember when no one wanted the 1500s......

yes, they are still on there. was gonna try to bead blast them, re-seal the barrels, and maybe do steel inserts in the lug holes (cant seem to fit washers between the lug nuts and mag wheels) maybe inserts can improve the lug nut situation.

dont try to restore them? more harm than good can result from a poor attempt to refurbish.

I’m down to just the 64 1500 now, so no need. I appreciate it though.
