McMaster Carr has a nice listing of shims in various sizes, and any reputable bearing supplier should be able to come up with a suitable alternative.

"The one- to five-thou range is a compromise between too loose and too tight, At zero, we're into preload and we can't measure that. Between zero and one thou, we could be measuring deflection and still be in preload. Between one and five, we know the bearing is not preloaded, and it's not too loose that it will cause other problems downstream. I usually find the clearance and then shim it out to 0.00 to 0.001 preload.

Thank you Phil for the information, assembled axle with new bearings and seals. I have two axles 1966 and 69 both had four shims that were .oo3 installed two shims on each side and dial indicated. End clearance indicated at about .004 both sides and I am comfortable going with that. what was giving me an issue is someone had worked on 69 axle and installed 3 shims on one side and 1 on the other. There is no substitute for experience .

Thank you again

I did not suggest cutting from sheets, McMaster Carr carries many “stock” sizes, though I only considered round. Sheet stock is thin enough where I am sure a regular/heavy duty pair of scissors could be used effectively.

I have some old axles that have shims on them. I can probably set you up with what you need. Pat

Shim stock as mentioned can be cut with scissors , so that you can make new shims. The old ones on my car were disintegrating.

I posted this over on FB to a similar question - worth repeating. I just went through this exercise, thanks to Linda for the extra shim stock!

Shims are NLA from Nissan - I cut them from shim stock.

If you go the same route, be aware that the factory shims are sized so that they are dimensionally smaller than the flange at the end of the axle tube they sit against by maybe 1mm all the way around. Such a thin piece of metal protruding from between the axle tube and the brake backing plate would be as sharp as a knife!

Minuscule details like this make me really appreciate the level of detail of those Nissan engineers went to.

How do you find the clearance? Specific steps, please.

Measure it with a dial indicator with the shims removed or measure the depth and bearing thickness with calipers.

Sorry to be dense, but what is it? How would I do this with a dial indicator?

Again, depth of what? Where?
