Yea, not happy about loose parts and the reprocussions. I'm trying to figure out how it became dislodged so as to determine what problems it may cause. I suspect that if it lets the others on that gear fall out too, than they could jam something up.

Yes, that looks like a synchronizer "dog" (I think that's what they call it). I would not wait, I would go ahead and take the transmission out and check it out. There is no "innocent reason" that should be floating around loose. There is absolutely nothing good that can come from running it. Do you have any history on the transmission? Has it been apart before?

Wonder if it is worth it to put a second strong magnet next to the drain plug, at least on the 4 speed. At least you can see the transmission by taking the cover off on the 4 speed...one thing it has going for it

A strong magnet would only serve to pick up the pieces of a detonating transmission in this case. There should not be anything this big in the transmission oil!

So, the real question is not if it’s bad or not, but what has allowed this part to dislodge in the first place?

(hopefully) A simple electircal question
Temp and fuel guagesboth stopped working at the same time on my short drive today. Fuses seem OK. Ammeter & Oil BP meter both are OK (oil measures straight off the little line coming to the guage, so I'd expect it to work). Fuel guage decided to work again tonight ... temp stil MIA ... checked connection at sensor to engine ... seems fine.
Any quick and easy hints for diagnostics next?

Check your gauge voltage regulator on the steering column.

Remove the gauge VR, sand around the mounting point and reinstall. May be as simple as a poor ground.

Didn't do a thing ... both gauges worked today in the cool Okanagan morning. Went home at high noon in the Okanagan Heat (30 C/86 F) ... and both (Fuel & Temp) went MIA. Parked at home in the shade while I ate lunch ... and (like the magic electricity is) ... both gauges worked on the way back to work.

In the hopes of not having to dash between shady spots ... any ideas?

GROUND, ground, ground - when it is not working, grab hold of the case and wiggle, if it comes back to life, take it off and reinstall. This will take you literally minutes and cost nothing.

Got it ... I'll go get some black wire, too. Thanks! I'll let you know how it turns out ... I need to find something good behind the dash to ground to ... apparently that is a drawback of a solid wood dash.

My stupid question for today:

How does the center dash console thing (with the heater controls/radio/choke/etc) bolt onto the sheet metal of the tunnel?

My Roadster came with all the dash stuff out of the car. And the floor & tunnel have been painted/coated. The areas where it looks like the holes were look like either bolts broke off (pretty evenly with the sheet metal) and were painted over, or the holes were filled somehow or other. Except there is like one bigger hole, but I don't see any threading on it.

So I'm not sure whether they are supposed to be threaded holes, or just holes and the bolt goes all the way through and a nut goes on the other side...or what.

Silly things like this would be much easier if I'd ever seen a complete Roadster in person! (Or have disassembled the car myself.)
