Alternate replacement front hub dust caps

Post by heimsoth »

I was in need of new front hub bearing dust caps and didn't want to pay $37 each plus shipping so I started searching for 47mm dust caps. The only ones I could find are for the Avonride trailer hubs in England. I found a pair on eBay for less than $20 shipped from England air mail. Just search for "Avonride 47mm" on eBay. They took about 3 weeks to arrive but I got them and they fit great and are high quality. They have an "A" embossed in the center but they will be covered by the wheel cap anyway. They don't seem to have any lead-in taper so they are tricky to get started in the hub. I used a 1-1/2" PVC pipe coupling as a driver tool to install them and that helped a lot.

Can anyone confirm if the dust cap part number is 40234-04100 and/or if that one will work?
Waiting for the bugs to be worked out...

Part number 40234-04100 is incorrect and measures about 2" diameter. The roadster hub is 47mm (about 1.85") and is part number 40234-14600 (NLA).

eBayer "reddat" had the 40234-04100 listed for the roadster but I contacted him and had him measure them. He said they're about 2".

BTW, the 240/260/280 Z front hub grease seals work fine on the roadster. The Timkin seal cross reference showed the same part number (1188S) for the roadster and the Z so I bought two 18864 seals from NAPA and they fit the roadster hub just fine.

Looks like one of my dust caps blew away ... is the above info still good? ie has anyone gone to NAPA for 18864 lately?

NAPA 18864 is the seal not the cap.
The seal is inside next to the inter bearing.

I have the dust caps from England and they look good. The pvc pipe installation is spot on for dent free install. I do have an original, slightly dented dust cap if anyone is desperate.

FYI, I have tried the napa dust caps listed above and they are just a tad too big and won't work.
