Ooooor, you could look into a R16 turbo... been kicking around the idea of a megasquirt managed, FI R16 turbo. Quick reving engine, quick spooling turbo, say 200hp. No frame mods, no transmission sorting and mods, no drive shaft mods, no problems running stock gauges, etc. Just a cool looking, near period correct engine that has not been done yet... and would be different!

Ok, I'll contact Steve (my guy) and let him know. Seriously though, we have been talking about it for quite some time, and he feels it is very doable and would be reliable and fun to drive. He has a few customers that are very familiar with megasquirt, and one that is running a boosted Miata very well on it for example. Steve is a one man show and in high demand, so figuring out a timeline would be important, but we could likely come up with an expected cost etc. Just don't expect an engine tomorrow, and do expect to have to do some tuning, but it is the kind of thing Steve enjoys doing, and would be done right.

So i love this idea but honestly it would cost more to do this than just swap to the miata engine only due to having to custom make manifolds and my r16 not having good compression and needing a rebuild, my 750hp 2jz rx8 ran on megasquirt 3 ran great, awesome system and very user friendly, i recommend to anyone i know that ask. I think the miata engine will be great plus for me i'm kinda of tired of doing all the mods then tuning and all that i really just want to put it in and go type thing. At least until my restoration is complete on it then maybe turbo later down the road.

Must have been awesome Matt! Glad to hear of another happy megasquirt user, that's always encouraging. My friend Steve was contracted to work on developing the Mazda/Ford KL24 V6 engine (Probe GT, MX6) for use in a Miata, making throttle bodies etc for it. Some long term customers' race project, not sure if it ever was taken to completion (you know how it is, someone is hot on something, they throw a bunch of money at it, then...). That too is a really really cool engine, very strong bottom end, excellent development potential, but nobody is making hipo parts for it unfortunately. Not sure a KL would fit in a Roadster (especially since it is a V6), but it sure would make for a cool power plant. Look forward to seeing your car since you're local!

So here is what I ended up doing last night(pulled body from frame. for some reason it wont let me attach the photos., my wife was kind enough to help out. Now to strip the frame and go get it powdered with some black,. Any pointers while the body is off? Possibly what's best to replace all the pads with on the frame?

Inspect/reveiw all of the welds. Chase all threads, repair as necessary.

For the pads that rest on the frame, between fame and body, I used a 3/8" yoga mat made of closed cell foam and cut to fit. See Techwiki for placement. FWIW Pat

Looks like you have an eager assistant! Mine knows nothing about mechanics but that doesn't stop me from starting a conversation about cam shafts or compression ratios until I see that blank but loving look in her eyes which says "Love you, have no idea what you're talking about, but the car goes fast!"

Ya she's great we've did alot. So today I pulled all steering and front hubs apart and put them in a degreaser bucket. And finished pulling off everything attached to the frame so I could go have it powder coated and to order all the ball joints I need to replace now since all mine are junk.
