will it fit?

Post by Artdent »

I have a 69 Datsun in nearly perfect shape, but the tires are ancient. I'd like to put Michelin Defenders T&H on it at 195/70R1491H. (I want to keep the car fairly near concours original -- so no huge increase in wheel or tire sizes.

The tires that came on it are 185s. Does anyone have solid knowledge as to whether going to 195/70R would lead to any rubbing problems. (No fender flaring allowed!).

Suggestions for similar tires are welcome so long as we stay close to the original specs.

Thanks guys!

Assuming you are mounting the 195/70/14 tires on the stock steel wheels? Yes it will fit.

Don't know about the 195/70/14 but many have used 195/60/14 or 185/60/14 both of which are huge compared to the OEM tires which were only about 4" wide at the tread.

185/70/14 is very close to the overall diameter of the OEM tire/wheel setup (24.2"):

A 195/70/14 is slightly taller at 24.75"

While the overall diameter of the 185 may be close in overall diameter, the tread width of the aforementioned Michelin defender in 185/70/14 is 42.5% wider than the OEM tire. 5.7" vs 4".
I suspose it depends on what your opinion of stock looking is. In my opinion taller but substantially wider does not meet the criteria for stock appearance. YMMV

What are the options out there for a 135/90-14?

Does anyone even make something like that?

Tire width as measured for a modern tire and tread width of a bias ply tire aren't the same measurement.
