the shift lever 'springs' are located under the brass nuts underneath the lever at the rear.

One of mine was broken. Somewhere I found some 'stronger' springs and my lever hardly moves, but still shifts easliy.

There are TWO pin types, one with provision for an o-ring, the other not. If you can find an appropriate o-ring - good to install - stops oil seeping up. ALso make sure that the 'breather' plastic vent is open - that minimizes pressure that causes that seepage.

Interesting development, The old transmission pins stick up higher than the new transmission. I even switched them one to the other and the pins don't stick up high enough. There's a big gap between the lever wings and the pins. I've checked to make sure they're all the way seated. Any ideas?

Springs and pins are the same length. I also measured the thickness of the case and they are both the same. This has really got me stumped!

Also, it looked like some type of sealing compound was used on both transmissions for the centering spring bolts. I that normal and if so, what comnpound should I use?

The top picture is the new trans. The older trans the pins stick out more than 1/8” one each side. This leads to a lot of slop in the shift lever.

Yes, this is pretty weird.

All I can think of is to find some small threaded rod that will fit into the springs/and the pins enough to push the pins higher. Mickey mouse, but given the apparent difference between a and b, cant think of anything else.

Random thought... Has anyone used a painless wiring setup? I get bored at work and have day-dreamed about doing a flat dash swap and using this as an opportunity to put new wiring in the car to connect to the toggle switches

Yep, I rewired my entire car with a Painless kit. Way better, but a lot of work.
