cheap carb linkage alternative

Post by Leadpaw »

Found a set of ball joints on amazon and took a gamble to see if they would fit the 1600 SU carbs and they do. Just took some M5x.8 bolts and cut them to size to finish them off. They are both right hand thread so syncing carbs are not as easy, but I can live with that.

Theyre listed as uxcell CS8 on amazon, they do come in right and left hand thread. 8mm ball diameter and m5x.8 thread pitch. Sorry didnt realize the amazon link had multiple ball joints listed.

I haven't bought any but my local Hobby Shop which has a huge range of Radio Control gear, has all sorts of cranks, ball joints and such available.

As a follow up - does any one know where one might find 'left hand' tapes/dies?

You can order these left and right hand thread very inexpensively direct from Midwest Control Products - I believe this is in the tech wiki as well...

Yah the wiki also said that they were going to go out of production, so I just wanted to put this here as a possible working alternative for those in need. Having them in 2 days is also really nice :)

So the idea is to get 1 left hand thread and 1 right hand thread ball joints 8mm,and then the threaded rod , m5x .8, cut to length. Sounds good.
Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Linda, the threaded rod has to have RH threads one end and LH threads on the other or the LH ball joint won't screw on.

I had heard the out of production comment too, but I know a friend recently ordered. And Nissanman is right - Ideally, to be consistent with the factory solution, you have a rod that is half and half left and right thread. Or, the bunch that I made up a couple of years ago were all threaded the same way with lock nuts and seem to work just fine. I sold about 50 sets give or take I think... and haven't been hunted down with pitchforks yet... I have them on 3 of my cars and several other local guys too...

Thanks for the tip on this, Leadpaw. I already had 4 of the right/left threaded rods that I picked up from midwest controls previously:

http://www.midwestcontrol.com/part.php?id=1500

After your tip, I picked up some of the right hand AND left hand threaded dogbone ends and threaded them on to the above listed rod.

left hand:

right hand:

left hand jam nuts:

Works like a champ, and now I have some nice spares.

Wow, I missed this completely. Just added to the tech wiki in David's original write-up. Hard to keep track of everything.
