bearings 101

Post by gpdatsun »

A recent FB post prompts this...

What I know of bearings is what any race engine builder should know. And what I know is from my building 3 main R16s, not the later 5 main R16 or U20.

The 3 main R16 is a unique beast (engine number > 40,000), but from Col Joe and myself, it's the one to run, it just spins faster than the 5 main! Three main bearings however, in contrast to the 5 mains, are harder to source. So here are the part numbers to search for.
Federal Mogul 6703M
Clevite MS1002GO
Daido M205K
Repco 3M2752
Anything that crosses to the Nissan number 12207-12200 STD
12209-12201 0.010 under (0.25mm)
12210-12201 0.020 under (0.50mm)
12211-12201 0.030 under (0.75mm)
12212-73600 0.040 under (1.0mm)

There is no new bearings available for the 3 main, only old stock, to my knowledge.

On rod bearings the situation is much easier, as bearings are plentiful, like the 5 main bearings, because of the H20 forklift, which is still in use to this day.
Clevite CB981P
Sealed Power 4-67015CP
NDC CB1002GP
And anything that crosses to 12111-12210 STD

My friend in roadsters Tim Putland just came across multiple rod bearings 22500 numbers that were old stock comp bearings; they differed by the clearance available.

I do have a stash of 3 main bearings because I've bought them over the years when I have found them. As for the rod bearings, I bought from Yamato Shokai until they informed me in the mid 2000's that NDC no longer would supply the tri-metal bearing of the early Clevite, so I've just gone off old stock since. But Reinaldo and his folks will help you for gaskets and bearings for your roadster.

As for building engines, clearance I look for is 1 to 2 thou on the mains and 2 to 3 thou on the rods.

See you at the track!

And maybe it was 25500 for those rod bearings Tim has; seems that was the comp number prefix...

Great info. Those bearing #s should be added to the wiki. I had a heck of a time sourcing main bearings for my G engine a few years back. Ended up buying some nos std size bearings from a person I met on ebay. Clutch parts for 1500s are almost impossible to find also! I had to get the clutch disc rebuilt as i couldnt find any new ones, and i reluctantly had to reuse the pressure plate.

Since Bill started this thread and mentioned this box of "Roadster Jewelry" as he called it, I better list what I found. The bags are marked with the part numbers (all of which are stamped on the bearings) and whatever I put in quotation marks. I've added their measurements under the bearing info.
12215-25510 F-77 STD "WIDE MAIN COMPETITION"
These measure 27.94mm wide and 1.85mm thick

12231-25510 F-77 STD “THIN MAIN COMPETITION”
22mm wide and 1.85mm thick

12231-78400 F-770 STD “STOCK THIN”
22mm wide and 1.84mm thick

Y4U10-12230 F-77 STD “AMERICAN THIN”
22mm wide and 1.85 thick

12215-61200 F-770 STD “STOCK WIDE”
28mm wide and 1.87 thick

Y4U10-12212 F-77 STD “AMERICAN -40 WIDE”
28mm wide 1.87thick
12215-25510 F-77 STD “STANDARD WHAT? THICK” yes, it says “what?”
As for the Nissan part numbers, some only ‘etched’ into the metal 12215-25510 and others are both "etched" 12215-25510 and are also stamped (inked) 12215-25516…yes that last one is a 6. I looked at all of them to verify this double number.
27.95mm wide and 1.87mm thick

12247-25510 F-77 STD “COMPETITION CENTER”
33.92mm wide and 1.94mm thick

12247-61200 F-770 STD “CENTER STOCK” two of these have the meatball stamp on them.
and 12247-61200 F-77 STD “CENTER STOCK” in the same bag
33.90mm thick and 1.91 wide

Y4UY5-12247 F-77 STD “AMERICAN STANDARD”
33.88mm wide 1.94mm thick
