No, those are ball detent plugs. On the back side of those are one ball bearing, and one spring. Those are what keeps the shift linkage in place while in gear. The tailshaft housing should just require the removal of the 8 bolts on the flange.

I got the tail section off.
I removed them too, but no ball bearing present (at least none my magnet would pull out). The ball bearings are supposed to be under the springs though, correct?

Yes. It goes: ball, spring, then bolt (aka, "plug"). There's no harm in removing them, just remember to put them back in. Were there even springs in there? Did those come out? My only suggestion would be to spray some PB plaster or other thin oil into the hole to loosen them up. You can also work the shift rod in and out to pop them out of the detents. They should come right out. Maybe roll the trans onto it's side and knock it against the ground.msampsel wrote:

Yeah, I figured they were round, since that's what most cars have. Apparently they're pill shaped.

swapped in a different five speed today and now the cross member doesn't line up with the frame--there is at least a half inch gap. The motor mounts are lined up perfect and bolted in.
the top of the cross member is up against the bottom of the tranny mount.

Whats holding the transmission up? Is the tail shaft is sitting on the X? Should be able to push it up by hand, or knee. Just make sure there are no obstructions before you initiate hydraulics.
