Is this a good price?

Post by Jdflyer »

As most of you I'm slowly gathering parts for my SR20 conversion. It's allowing me to wait on sales, find deals for parts, etc. After talking with both Michael and Kevin (I really appreciate the input from both of you, thanks) I've decided to just go with S14 SR0DE. Being new to the Nissan engine world I am constantly looking for people with more experience than I to weigh in on what I find. While looking for parts I came across the following and was wondering what everyone thinks. Thanks in advance for your input.

SR20VE P12 Cylinder head
Complete including:
  • Head
  • Springs
  • Rockers and N1 cams
  • Valve cover
  • Solenoids
It does not include the CAS or Coil Packs.

The guy is asking $1100 for the items ($1700 including the CAS and Coil Packs)

I would suggest looking for a complete nice low mile drivetrain otherwise you'll nickle and dime yourself to death or at least your budget. Just my two cents.

So are you thinking you want to do a VVL swap?

I'm thinking Mike. I know you and Kevin said it could get a little pricey, but I can do some of the work, including some machining myself.

If that is just a head, and time is not of the essence, then I would wait. That seems high.. I think I paid around 1200 short block including solenoids and a CAS.. Don't really remember exactly..

There are so many little costs involved in building the VE that are not part of installing a DE.. And some not so little, like computer and tuning..

That seems like a lot given that we can get a complete engines with ECU and tranny here locally for less than 1K , (I had checked them a few times after seeing Mike car :smt003 )

There is one right now with no ECU selling for $850 (~$625 USD) I've dealt with these guys and they are negotiable

here's a couple others complete with ECU from another vendor for $1150 ($850 USD)

Thanks guys. When I really delve into what I need off of the VVL (oil pump, pickup, manifold) I think it does make more sense to either wait for a better deal or just buy the entire engine and sell off the parts I wouldn't be using.
