1969 1600 near me, in MI

Post by bthorsen »

Hey guys- I've been on this site a number of years, as I was turned on to roadsters in the late 90's. I worked in a shop in CO- the owner had a Datsun race car, and a few parts cars around the lot, and the other mechanic owned the car pictured below. He took it to the NW, and has since sold it- probably in Seattle. Anyone own it or know of it?

Anyhow- I'm in Detroit now, and there are plenty of cars around here, but few Roadsters. This one on eBay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/302277619177?ul_noapp=true is about an hour away from me, and I'm contemplating it. The problem is that I currently have zero garage space. By the end of the year, I will have a new house being built, with 3-4 "extra" garage spots (7 total). Fortunately, the owner states he is not in a hurry to sell this car. Anyhow- your thoughts on the valuation of this car would be appreciated. Most notably- there is stated to be "minimal" rust behind the rear wheels, the wheels are not in great shape, and the rear main seal is leaking. I also notice that is has an "R" code engine- how does that affect value and performance of the car, relative to other codes, such as U20, etc?

R code is a 1600, which is a good basic bullet proof engine. The U20 is typically more desirable, and higher valued.
You need to decide if you want a high or low windshield model. I prefer low, but of the high windshields, I like the 69 for it's front tear drop marker lights.
Very difficult to determine value when you cannot see the flaws up close. But what I see is a very solid, well sorted car that is cosmetically, and at least superficially well sorted and cared for. I would think anywhere from $8,000-$16,000 would not be unreasonable. And higher is certainly possible.
"When all else fails, force prevails!" Ummm, we're gonna need a bigger hammer here.

Thanks for the reply. I was going to go see/drive the car today, but he says he doesn't have insurance so driving it is not an option.
