Remove Rear fenders and Rocker panels to remove rust?

Post by AltxF4 »

So over all my rear fenders and rocker panels are in good shape, but I do have some rust holes on the bottom of the rear fenders. There are also some spots on the rockers that might be of questionable integrity.

What would be the best way to remove the rear fenders and rocker panels so I can have access to fight the rust and put down some encapsulator with the intent of welding the same fenders and rockers back on?

Rather than decide on a course of action that may be very unusual, then ask for advice on how to do it, you may do better to take some pics and post them and describe the extent of the rust, then ask for suggestions on the best course of action and best way to steer that course. As a general rule of thumb rust is cut out, replacement parts purchased or ordered, then butt-welded in. You could look on U-tube. there are lots of videos of the general procedure. welding techniques, tools, weld through primer etc.

Alright. I just figured I wanted to combat any and all rust from spreading in the future, and some of the areas that can be effected are typically inaccessible. It's the whole door pillar rocker pan area I am worried about. I will take some pics and post them up.

Alright...Here is what I am battling. Nowhere as bad as the Midwest and east coast guys, but I really want to be anal with this project.

As you can see, forward rocker end caps need some patch, passenger Rocker in front of rear wheel needs some patching, passenger rear quarter needs some patch along with hammer and dolly work, Both rear door pillars have some odd dents, I have no idea what all the little dimples are in the rear wheel arches, and the rear valance needs some major work. The driver rocker panel passes the hammer test, but I hear stuff rattle inside when I hit it, and the sound is not consistent. on the passenger side rear wheel arch, there is a lot of sand and debris trapped in between the tub and fender.

In regards to the rear valance, are there any templates for the proper curve or is it a know constant radius? Its banged up really good.

Also, Drivers rear quarter has some decent oil canning. I will see about heat and quench shrinking it.

Iirc There are 3 drain holes in the pichweld of the rockers. Pull the jack hole plug and blow compressed air into the drain holes, then reverse, through the jack hole.
This will take place many times throughout the bodywork process. More debris will break loose as you hammer and dolly and machine sand. Mine dropped 2 quarts :smt006

I brushed Por15 in as many places as i could, after doing all the bodywork and first prime.

As you remove rusted areas to patch, you should get access to spray a rust preventative into normally closed areas like the rocker.

Also along the same lines as body work, I am trying to determine if I have 65-67 front fenders or 67.7 (turns out I think my car is a 67). It is hard to tell by the wiki pictures on my phone as one angle it looks like 67.5 flare and others it looks 65-67. Is there a measurement from the lip edge to the flare radius?
