ECU's, Consults, software etc...

Post by Kendall124 »

Howdy Gang,
so here we go... lets talk tuning. Yep, Fast and Furious kinda stuff. Mother boards, daughter boards, ECU's, consult ports, OBD1, OBD2, Nistune, NismotronicSA, real time mapping, uploads, downloads!!!
AAAAAaaaaaaaagggghhhhh!!!!
***Disclaimer, I'm an old carb guy. This is new territory for me.***

Here's what I know.
1) My JDM SR20DE is from a 96 Silvia.
2) The consult port is located on the chassis wiring harness, thus not included in the purchase.
3) There is a TON of info on the SR engine on the internet. It's hard to filter through whats true or speculation.
4) I have found pin outs for my ECU to install a consult OBD1 connector
5) I harvested 2 OBD1 connectors from the local pick and pull.

Now why would that be important? Well, like I said I'm an old carb guy. I usually just use my senses and a timing light. My speed shop did the install but said I need to go find a local "Guru" to dial her in. She runs fine, I just want to know!

I'll keep you posted.

I purchased a relatively inexpensive connector for the 17 pin gray consult port off ebay for about $20. It came with conzult software which will not run on my computer (not supported since about 2014) so I purchased a license for NDS I (Nissan Datascan) from the land down under for about $50. Unlike some other obd II ports I've used, I'm only able to get data from the car while its running.

The scan tool has a micro-usb to usb cable but it's only about 18" long so I'm purchasing a longer one so I can place the laptop on the passenger floor and record the data stream.

I can send you a screen shot if you're interested in what parameters it measures.

What I have is not for tuning but can read factory error codes and sensor outputs.

Any info will be welcome. A lot of the tuning stuff comes with having a turbo'd engine (DET) when larger injectors, MAF's and throttle bodies are used. Again, I'm running a plain 'ol DE but it'd be nice to know what she's doing.
I found an authorized Nistune workshop in Everett called Zsport. I called but their import guy was on vacation. Website looks legit. http://www.zsport.com/Everett-Racing/Upgrades/
It'd be fun to hook her up and put her on a dyno "just to see".

If you want to talk OBD stories heres one , about OBD lll ( yes I know it is not offically called lll but techs do ) I'm talking the laptop that connects to the factory by by the net and can save a ton of data
I'm working @ a Mitsu dealer in KC area in 04 a hot looking girl has a 2000 eclipse GT that she just bought , or her new boyfriend did used . it has a misfire code , I drive it and clear the code seems to run good . she thinks it is a warranty item , but the adviser checks and it's CP , it had I think 40 K miles I recommend asking her if she is using premium gas ,
but lets see if it sets again . she and the boyfriend return a couple days later and it has set again a misfire . we tell her we can replace plugs , not cheap she kind of balks on buying premium gas so I think that might be the case .
like I said she is a babe 9 -9.5 and he like a 4-4.5 .
they start getting angry like you don't know what you are doing and why isn't it warranty . I asked how do you drive ? she says just easy driving ,
I say.. well it shows it set @ 84 mph and very late at night , she kind of clams up and the boyfriend starres at her . he wants to see that so the manager ,he and me go out to it , I wasn't aware of it then but the manager puts in a code and a page and a half more data comes up . including the last 4 times it set this code which twice was around @ 1:30 am and 2:50 am and the top speed was 97 mph
and the distance traveled 12.6 miles
The boyfriend tells the manager he just moved her from an apartment 12 miles away where she lived with a guy before moving in with him.
the boyfriend owned his business & had a guy that worked for him stake out her old appartment and sure enough she was seeing the guy after the boyfriend went to sleep so said the manager ... he was wanting to marry her

Good luck with this. It should not be hard to get it wired up to get the readings.

Mine does either bluetooth or hard line to read and adjust, and your choice of several software systems for tuning. But I am using a custom Megasquirt..

I was in the same position as you. Looking for someone to tune my S14 DE. This company will do reflash on Nissan ECU. The best part about them is you tell them all the Mod's you have on the motor. They do a reflash to match and if at any time you upgrade just send the ECU back for the up date. Ok I do not know for sure if they can do DE motor but more likely they do.

Just came across this old thread. Did you ever sort out what you needed.

Pete at PLMS is very knowledge and I used one of his cables (which I still have; So old its D9 serial!) He also provided invaluable help with my SR conversion almost 20 years ago.
Their website is still up .

I used "DataScan" for monitoring and recording data as well as fault finding.

If you want to go from looking to changing things they do daughter boards, switchable maps etc.
