1600 pushrods

Post by Datrock »

Hi, I am wondering what pushrods are being used in the R 1600 when the engine is built for racing or a stoker. Are the stock ones from Nissan good enough?

The engine I'm working on is a stoker with a hotter than stock cam and had nissan comp valve springs installed before I started working on it. Yesterday I found a couple slightly bent pushrods and now want to replace all of them. I rolled all of them over a piece of glass and a 4 wobbled while rolling.

I installed some old straight pushrods and did a compession check and it is 180-182 on all 4 cylinders, so think there are no bent valves. I have a feeling that the engine may have been re-assembled with the bent pushrods and has been running them for a few years. Any info would be great.
Thanks ahead of time... Bill

13201-14616 intake valve
13202-14616 ex valve
13203-14616 outer ex valve spring
13204-14116 inner valve spring
13256-14615 spacer rocker shaft
13257-14615 spacer rocker shaft
13224-14616 bracket rocker shaft qty 2 reqd
13235-14616 nut valve rocker
13234-14616 screw adjust rocker valve
14060-14617 exhaust manifold
14035-14615 manifold to cyl head gasket
15010-25501 oil pum with strainer
21051-14615 water pump and pulley
11041-14616 head
13213-14616 ex valve guide
11098-14601 insert valve intake

I have seen plenty of race cars that used stock pushrods, but more stout ones would not be a bad addition. A local racer had an R motor (not a stroker) that would turn 9k. It used custom pushrods from Crane I believe. I had a set of them that he took out - one had kinked at high revs. Quite interesting!

I used the stock push rods in my stroker.

Isky makes a great chrome-moly pushrod that works well on the roadster. Cost is reasonable, and it's the pushrod of choice for racer Bill Wessel, and myself.

Thanks for the information, I have a set of new Nissan pushrods on the way. I went to the Isky site and they have 3 different cams and the beefier pushrods for the R 1600.

Before installing the new pushrods I'm going to put a dial indicator on a push rod to check the lift, then I'll check for clearance in the valve springs, I'm worried that the new valve springs might be bottoming out and bending the push rods. Has that happened to anyone before? Thanks again.. Bill

I use Smith Brothers pushrods in my Harley dragbike. You can send them a sample of what you have and discuss what they can produce for you. Many materials and shapes are offered in tubing.
