Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
How is it possible to get a bump in the block?
Congrats for being persistent!

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
If the block was dropped on a machined edge or corner, it could raise a bump which would affect sealing. I am more wondering how a core hole gets out of round.Linda wrote:How is it possible to get a bump in the block?

After driving this car last fall I can't stop now! I drives so nice. It looks like the block was dropped on the top corner and that caused the damaged.spl310 wrote:If the block was dropped on a machined edge or corner, it could raise a bump which would affect sealing. Well I found a camshaft from a shop in California and I am now shipping the lifters to their shop for gridding. I hope to have the cam and lifters back soon. More to follow!!jnnt29 wrote:Well the hits keep on coming!!! Now the camshaft in my replacement motor is bad. If anyone knows where or has a R16 camshaft please let me know. JT

Received the replacement Camshaft from American Custom Cams. Now the third block will be built and hopefully the beautiful little rascal will run like a top!!! Fingers crossed.

Your positive and cheerful attitude in the face of such setbacks is admirable! I have had my Roadster for almost a year and never actually driven it but somehow just surmounting obstacles is vary satisfying. I guess that whole, journey > destination thing has some truth to it. Best of luck!

Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
I'm trying to be as positive as possible. Sometimes it is challenging, especially when another part fails. Finding replacement parts is like finding pieces of a jig saw puzzle. But the good thing is when it is all put back together the motor should be fairly reliable to drive. I was able to drive the 1600 a lot last fall and that was the first time it had been driven in over 7 years. With that said I expected that there would be some issues with the motor, but not to this extent. My Brother in-law is a great mechanic and I have learned so much about engines and how this one is put together. More to follow on this journey!!AidanDawn2000 wrote:Your positive and cheerful attitude in the face of such setbacks is admirable! The rebuilt block was dropped off on Friday at the shop. If everything goes well I should have it back in a week. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
This has been a long and sometimes painful process to resurrect my car. The shop is adjusting the valve and will hopefully fire it up for the first time in over three months. I really want to drive my 1600. Hopefully today or tomorrow! Keeping my fingers crossed!

Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
Stopped by the shop to check on the progress of the 1600 and low and behold I was able to start it up! Yay. On the home stretch. They told me I should be driving it home tomorrow! I can't wait!

Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
I was able to drive the 1600 today but did not bring it home. The shop owner wanted to do the finale test drive to ensure it is working properly. The engine worked well but had a loud growl when you put harder on the gas. I suspect it has to do with the SU not adjusted properly. Tomorrow I should bring it home. I can't wait!

Re: New Datsun 1600 owner
Picked up the 1600 tonight from the shop and the engine ran great. The engine ran smooth until I got close to home and the idle started to run rough. opened the hood and there was gas coming out of the over flow tube. looks like the float was stuck and the carb flooded. My brother in-law Bill and I cleaned the bowl and the gasket was deformed and needs to be replaced. will do that tomorrow. disappointed to say the least. will be back on the road tomorrow if everything works out.
