Alternator - 1.6 2.0

Post by Skyman »

I have seen a couple of alternators on ebay that say they are for the 1600 or the 2000. Are these the same alternators? Could I rebuild my alternator from my old 1600 and use it on the 2000 (U20)? My Nissan manual shows the 2000 model AS2030a2. The 1600 model AC300/12X2R.

Thanks,
Kyle

Kyle,
See the excellent Alternator page on this website under "Electrical". It has numbers for the alternators plus crossover numbers for other manufacturers
The "Lester #" is a number used to identify the exact alternatorthat is OEM in your car. For my 68 1600 it was 14103. Mitsubishi.
Also search the past posts for info on rebuilding. A Mitsubishi minor rebuild kit
from Wison Auto Electrics www.wilsonautoelectrics.com is #23-27-9100 2 bearings and brushes according to a post I saw. Diodes also possibly available.
Maybe get a rebuilt and keep your core to rebuild so you will have a spare.
It was stressed to be sure all grounding points are cleaned and tight, and be sure to disconnect battery before doing anything. Also consider extra fuses in wiring as described in posts. Be sure voltage regulator is good, if not consider aftermarket solid state VR easily available with number found on posts here also.

Good luck!

Now I think I am more confused then before. I will be running a non-smog 2L (U20). In the article he mentions his 1600. I see no mention of the 2000. I am assuming that they are the same. Smog type or non-smog type. Sooooo I should be looking for a non-smog? I have one that came off the 1600 that may be rebuildable.

Kyle,
As I understand it you use the 14103 alternator for the smogged cars even if you have the smog stuff removed because of the type of mounting which is 2 ear (single mount) that was used on your car originally. This is the OEM Mitsubishi alt. Or you can go with the interchange units listed for smogged. Take in a picture of your alt out of the manual or bring yours in to match so that whatever you get the mounting will be correct.
Pay the core charge and keep your alt if it can be rebuilt as a spare is what I would suggest.
