Rota Mesh Wheel

Post by digits4063 »

I am looking at this wheel in 15x7 with a 20 offset. Based on what I have read here, I do not believe this would be a problem on my '66 1600, but of course I have questions for the experts:

I have noticed that MANY of you have gone with 15x6 on the front and 15x7 in the rear. Is this due to clearance with the front fenders?
Would 15x7 all the way around cause any issues?
Would changing to this wheel size and offset require replacement of the wheel studs?

I think 15x7+20 is pushing it especially on rears. I would try to stay around 10-12 offset.

15x7 ~+12 is common on the later cars. The '66 has much smaller fender flares. Tire size also plays an important role in clearance!

Cars vary as to fit. 15x7+20 Is 3/8" farther from the body than the more common 15x7+12 - a good thing on your early car - and might need a spacer in the front to clear the front sway bar at full lock. Most wheels require a spacer or grinding to clear the front hub anyway. I think 15x7+20 is usually a good fit on the rear, but might need a spacer to clear the rear leaf springs. Fit would mostly depend on the tire size, 185 would be better than 195.
As for replacing the studs, IMHO all alloy wheels require the studs to be replaced. You should have 7-10 threads outside of the wheel, some might tell you the 7-10 threads of engagement is enough. Then you are relaying on the thin part of the lug to hold the wheel in place.

I just purchased the rota RBs for my 66. I talked with Jennifer at Rota. According to the company, the 15x6 +20 offset is the best fit. I will be having 195/55r15 Hankooks mounted on Tuesday, but don't yet have the body back on the chassis, so can't tell you how they fit. I figured the 15X6 wheel has more than enough tire on it. I don't think my 96hp 1600 can burn the tires off anyway.

18racing.com is the Rota website.

195/55r15 on 6" rims is very close to "stock" size.
15x6+20 wheels will have 1/2" more clearance on both the inside and outside

So from what I have read in the replies, I should be looking for 15x6 +12 to +20 for the wheels and then put 195 or 185/55r15 tires on them. I would need to consider replacing the lug bolts and may need spacers.

Scott (fish) has an early car with 14x6 Panasports, maybe ask him what his wheel/tire specs are?

If you go with a 185 width, I would go with a 60 series tire.
