Ignition Switch Issue??

Post by MacLish »

Car: 1969 1600 w/ SR20

Having an issue with my original ignition switch I think. Car has no problem starting when cold whatsoever. However, if I run it for a while (15+ mins) turn it of and then try turning it on again it just keeps turning over without starting. At that time, If I unplug the ignition module and plug in a generic replacement and turn the key it starts right away.

I would really like to retain the original ignition module if possible. After searching and researching I am finding that these are obviously quite finicky but didn't see this exact situation anywhere.

Is one of these my likely solution or is there something else possibly at play here?

I used a standard US120 ignition switch in my '69-1600, direct replacement. Used in a lot of Japanese cars of that era. I found mine on eBay for $12.95 but there are other options.

Sorry to hear that Torque. Went out to get my old switch since I don't trust my memory. The one from my car '69-1600 and the US120 are the same.

My OEM-

The US120 I bought-

Same terminal layout as above.

I was careful with the swap as the wires were very similar in color.

The plot thickens.

You have to match wire to the appropriate terminal on the new switch.

Stupid question coming: Do you have to get it re-keyed if you put in a new ignition switch?

Also, when I put my key in my car, I have to fiddle a bit with the key (move it in or out slightly, and sometimes move steering wheel, while trying to turn key) to get key to turn. Would a new ignition switch fix that issue? I have a 1970 2000 #13774.

Thanks!

You can replace the electrical portion without replacing the mechanical portion, so the answer to the first question is maybe. It depends on what all you replace.

If you have to move the steering wheel, that just means that the locking pawl is bound by the column - no indication of a worn out switch. If you have to move the key in and out, yes, the ignition lock is worn. A new switch will fix the second, but not the first in this scenario.

Thread revival:
Looks like the US 120 switch from Tech Wiki is different than mine. The mounting slot is different.
Anyone modify this to work?
