Upper bumpstops, necessary?

Post by Conner »

Tonight I tore one of the small upper bumpstops while trying to re-install it into the upper control arm. I am debating whether to try to find some new ones or to just discard them and go without.
Do these serve any real purpose?

What i'd think.....
well, you know when you are goin 50 and you get to the point where the old road ends and the new road starts? Well instead of hitting the bumpstops youll hit the tie rods or if you are really unlucky you just my pop a hole in your oil pan.

I'm talking about the upper bumpstops, not the lower ones.

These little guys:

I wouldn't go without lower bumpstops for anything.

My brother left them out when he did his frame off. No adverse affects yet and he has driven it hard.

If you have a Pep Boys (or equivalent) in your area, I'd bet they have something like that on the "Help" aisle.

I'll have a look at Pep Boys tomorrow. The vendors don't appear to have these (I checked two websites and contacted two others); one said that the only come into play when you jack up the car.

I'm leaning towards just leaving them out.

I would suspect they are not critical but stop a metel to metal noise when you jack it up,,, or go airborn! Yes I used to!!! How about this theory: to limit the travel as to not to damage the shocks?

That's an interesting theory, but they probably only reduce the shock-travel by about an inch, because those bumps are only an inch or so tall.

I found some that are very close to original at O'Reilly's. Sam

Thanks, I'll check them out. Didn't see anything at PepBoys.
