Bay Area Fun Run!

Post by Alvin »

***Attention Bay Area Roadster Owners***

Image

Let's do a Fun Run!
Preferably before April (think of it as a pre-Solvang shakedown). What dates work for you? Think of a destination/route it doesn't have to be far.

I'm ready to go this weekend...have wine pickups in saratoga and gilroy...was thinking of run down 9 or 35 to PCH1 to 152 to Wastsonville and Uvas Rds...or reverse directions.

I like the run to Pescadero. Would also like to check the resrevoirs up in Almaden to Cinnabar...for future runs...

Sounds fun!

In order to be not-too soon (so we can organize and so weather can be better), and not too close to Solvang dates... maybe something like March 26 or 27?

Route possibilities:
A) Highway 35 to Hwy 9 to Davenport and and back up Hwy 1 to Hwy 84?
B) Claremont resort in Berkeley to Grizzly Peak to Skyline Blvd south to Redwood rd into Castro Valley
C) Blackhawk museum in Danville to Camino Tassajara to Highland Drive to N. Livermore Dr. to Mines Rd and Livermore wine country
D) Mt Hamilton from San Jose down to Mines road to Livermore
E) Hwy 84 from I280 through Woodside to Hwy 1, North to Ocean Beach or Baker Beach / Presidio in San Francisco
F) Mt Diablo from Walnut Creek to the top and back down into Diablo
G) Tiburon to Bodega Bay and back to San Francisco
H) Lafayette Park Hotel up to Reliez Valley Rd to Alhambra Valley rd to San Pablo Reservoir and back into Orinda

Dave, nice list. Thats about two months of weekend fun runs right there in your list. That would take us right up to Solvang, if we got started now..... If only we all had the time.

Option D looks ineresting. coming down from Mt Hamilton is that via San Antonio Valley road to Mines road up to Livermore?

That looks like it has lots of twisties. What are those roads like?''

I have never been up on that side of Mt Hamilton on those roads. They look paved which is good. are they smooth or real bumpy or washboarded?

anyone been up there lately after the rain last month?

We have some NorCal people who are up near you, and a number down in the South Bay. We need probably two fun runs because the two areas are a good 1-2 hours apart. I'm in for any I mentioned, but for guys near you, Dano, we can do Bodega bay or also consider a Hwy 12 run into Sonoma or my favorite road, Hwy 128 through Boonville to Pt Arena.

It's a great view from up there on Mt. Hamilton but Hwy 130 is a tight road, not high speed. Alvin took a bunch of us up there a couple years ago and it was a fun ride, but a bit slow coming down the far side of the mountain on Hwy 130. San Antonio to Mines is a fun road, check out the street views on Google Maps, because it is so isolated you might imagine you are in the middle of Kansas. Fun drive, and you can end up at a number of good wineries in Livermore for lunch.

Dave all your options sound awesome.128 to Pt Arena sounds far out! Hell we could go through Gualala up the Russian river for some serious miles!

Well, I couldn't wait! My wife and I woke up this morning, saw the 79 degree forecast and decided to take the Roadster to Stinson Beach. This would make a great run. It's about 40 minutes from Sausalito to Stinson on a great little road called Hwy 1... you mighta heard of it. Then the return from Stinson Beach was on Panoramic Hwy past Mt Tam and onto Edgewood into Mill Valley, about 50 minutes back to Tiburon. I know that those from the South bay will think this may too far for them, but it isn't...and you can start and end in Sausalito or Tiburon for lunch. In any case, it's a top choice in my book (partly because I have done the Hwy 35/84/9 route so much lately). But I will do them all !!

Stacy, like Dave said the backside from Lick down to Livermore is like you are on the moon. Totally different terrain and scenery. LOTS of sweepers. The trip up to Lick/Mt.Hamilton is unfortunately/fortunately extremely tight, windy and sometimes sprinkled with cyclists. All worth it imho b/c of the spectacular view at the peak. Here is a report from the last Mt. Hamilton run we did:

Love that picture!! I have some house guests next weekend, but I still might be able to slip out for a few hours. Just got back from blasting the Oakland hills 5 minutes ago!
