It HAS to hug the block going down. Pesky thing called a steering shaft gets in the way. The one in Michael's picture cuts down very close to the block. Mine, even though it looks like it comes way out, then runs way back to the block before it goes down. So it needs to be close.

Based on the pictures I am seeing, that looks to be very close to the steering at best case. That being said, I often have to remind myself that the way I drive my car puts significantly more stress, and moves the motor (and the rear axle, etc.) a lot more on its mounts, than just about everyone else.

Any Subaru Justy alternator from 1985-1995 will work, does not matter if it is carbed or EFI.

We are working on a bolt in SR20-ready (or KA for that matter) radiator that will work with both steering boxes and have the necks correct for the SR20. We have the design, just working with a few vendors to get a better price that we can pass along.

How hard are those manifolds to come by? Source? What is the most free flowing manifold that we can reasonably get here in the states?

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

They are not too hard to find-- just look for a Primera manifold-- if you can't find one, I think I have one on the shelf here.

The problem with the Primera manifold is the transitions to turn the pipes 90 degrees as they come down angled to go under the engine. Lots of work to make something that looks good-- this is why we use the FWD SR20DE manifolds on nearly all our swaps.

So did you end up cutting off at the weld line where each of the two pipes cut in? If so, did you just join with new pipe or did you try to grind off from the section you cut off to get it to go toward a better angle and then grind off? By chance do you have a picture of Mike Bratten's manifold at the lower section so we can see what you did?

Are these manifolds cast iron or do they have a fair amount of steel? I say this cuz the LsX manifolds that I'm used to have a high steel content such that they respond very well even to Mig welding.

Hi Jeff,

Yes, we cut off the cast flange and then fabricate from there. The exhaust manifold is made from Stellite, and it TIG welds really nice (once you get it really clean). We also cut off the ceramic heat shields off of each of the down tubes for a cleaner look.

I had photos of the mods we did on Mike's manifold, but lost them in a hard drive crash a few years ago-- the mods were fairly simple, nothing too exotic. The next time I get Mike's car up on the lift I can see if I can get some pics for you.

We have motor mounts, alternator install kits, big brake kits, and other conversion parts in stock, ready to ship when you are ready to order.

Are you ready to order a radiator?

The quotes we have received from our preferred vendor have been unacceptable, so I'm still shopping around. We are working on a group buy of 6 of them, but the quotes have been too much so far.

Hi Andy,

We use the Subaru R180/R160 rear ends when we are building Datsun 510s, but it is not something that would work well with a roadster since the roadster has a live axle rear end (the 510 is a IRS setup).

We have had great success with the Mazda RX-7 rear axle conversions however! If you are not familiar with that conversion, here is a thread where we discuss it:

Im not ready yet, but I plan on using your motor mounts and alternator kits. Most likely your rear as well. I already have your 300zx kit on my stock engine car. But when I am ready to do the conversion, I am hoping that you have a lot of the needed pieces available as well, like the radiator and water neck.
