Solvang - arriving in a Not-a-Datsun?

Post by Dave_Car_Guy »

After a few years of failing to attend or due to having family-related conflicts, this year I have gotten my wife to agree to attend Solvang with me. But as we will make it a week-long coastal journey, she isn't too keen on living out of the Roadster for 6 days (I don't blame her for that). So, I am looking forward to seeing all the cars, but unfortunately won't bring mine (that's ok, it seems there will be plenty of others there to represent). So, two things I wonder about:
1) Is anyone else coming just to look and not show? and
2) does showing up in something other than the Datsun make me a DB?

I went for two years before I was able to bring my car. Had a good time! Great time to put faces to names, and meet some fellow Datsun fanatics.

Dave, after seeing pictures of your garage, I don't think you could show up is anything that's not jaw dropping. NOBODY is going to mind seeing something from your stable! Just wish I could be there. Mike

I have come without my Datsun on several occasions. Nobody threw anything at me. The cars are great but it is just as much about the people.

Hey Dave,
I wouldn't worry! I might be going sans roadster this year as well but I usually do whatever it takes to get myself and the family to the show :)

I was going with D-bag, but yours works just as well. I'd rather not be either, yet sometimes I'm both.

Thanks all, I can sleep better now!

Looks like the wife an I will be there. Flying into LAX, renting car and staying in Solvang. My sr20 car is very close to being done, but not willing to make that my first road trip. It will be nice to meet up with my fellow roadster enthusiasts.

Hey, those are MY initials :smt102
I never brought my Datsun, had a blast every time, and was apparently a DB. :D

Burbank airport is soooo much better, if possible. Closer, faster in and out, rental cars right there, less traffic. You can easily add an hour or two to your drive due to traffic depending on time of day.

Have to agree, worse part of the trip is getting from LAX out to the coast, and then getting back to LAX. Wish I could find a decent flight to Burbank, as we like the rest of the ride north.
First year we flew to Santa Barbara, the rental car selection is crappy, but so convenient, 20 miles to Solvang.

Realize that you can still hit traffic from Burbank up the 101 but it is less. Also you can get to a nice part of the coast from Woodland Hills then via the usual fun run routes- Mulholland Hwy (2lane road) thru the Santa Monica Mtns to Pac Coast highway and then head North.
There are usually several groups leaving at different times driving different routes to Solvang.

Already booked my tickets through LAX. When my wife said that she thought it would be fun, I made it happen before anything else showed up on our schedule. We're arriving 9:00 pm Thursday evening at LAX, renting a car then driving to Solvang. Flying out of LAX around 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Hopefully lower traffic times. What can I expect for travel times? Pat

I live in El Segundo, which is immediately south of LAX. You won't have any traffic issues, expect to get to Solvang in a little less than 2 hours.
