San Marino Motor Classic (June 12, 2016)

Post by bakerjf »

This event is going to have another "J Class" for 2016 - it's a concours-level event in Pasadena that is really top-flight with some of the finest cars you'll ever see. If accepted, the entry fee is $100, which admittedly is a little steep - but the gift bag is pretty great. There were three or four of us last year - it would be nice to see more great Roadsters this year!

A roadster or two were on TV last year from this car show on "Car Crazy". I think I posted on this this site but I think I saw two within the TV show.

Aaron Weiss, the event's organizer, is putting out a call for more cars. This event is one of the few high-level car shows in California that thinks enough of Japanese cars to have a dedicated "J-Class" - it's a great opportunity for us owners to represent and educate the public.

I'd go but my roadster is not concours-level. Just really nice.

Really nice, might be nice-enough. None of the three Roadsters there last year were perfect, just real good examples. You can choose to be judged, or just display your car for fun - that's what I did last year as I didn't have time to prepare it thoroughly. The judging itself has the guys with the straw hats and blazers, but it's hardly the doctor's exam some other concours events are. For example, last year they didn't ask to look at your convertible top or trunk, but they do want to see that everything works like it's supposed to, and they want to hear you tell the story of your car. It's a thoroughly classy and fun event with some incredible cars.
To get your car into the event, you do have to provide some pictures and answer some questions. The link is above. Come on out even if you don't bring a car!

Yes, this was an incredible show, with cars that you would only see at high level events..like Pebble Beach. Here are 2 photos that the event took of my '69. The Datsuns were lucky to be situated under some shade trees. It was a beautiful day, but very warm.

Getting the car prepared for the show - my NOS valve cover (unpolished per Alvin and Stan :D). I have to admit I'm kind of liking it - especially the gold zinc cable clip.

Thanks Sid - while I have you on the line... When did the decal-type oil cap come into being? Didn't these cars originally come with a just a plain flat-finish type of cap?

I don't know exactly when the sticker cap came out. All of the period road test photos show a plain cap.

I never saw a sticker cap until the 90's. But during the 80's the roadster was not out and about much.
Certainly as said none of the roadster caps were sticker as OEM.
