67 SRL311-00279 Restoration Long Project

Post by S Allen »

Here is my saga regarding the 67 2 liter I picked up back in 2008. Phil Hall got an email from a fellow out of Washington D.C. wanting to sell his 67 2 liter. Phil knew I was looking for one so he emailed me about it. I contacted the fellow and we struck a deal. My brother and I made a road trip to pick it up. That was an interesting trip.

The car had been completely dismantled around 1985. He had moved several times and was missing quite a few parts. Windshield was broken, the redone chrome had tarnished green oxide. I would later discover the entire steering tube assembly was missing along with the ignition switch. The motor was in pieces. I did not intend for this project to drag on as long as it has but life gets in the way sometimes. I have made progress just not as fast as I would have liked. I have gathered most of the parts I need at this point. I just need to dedicate some time to get the project going again.

These are things that are done.

Late style solex carbs rebuilt by Dan Garrison-jetted by Dave Premo
Lots of plating parts with the help of Dave Premo
5 speed rebuilt by Dave Premo
Engine rebuilt by local machine shop-all standard size-new timing chains and gears-parts from Stan
Head redone-C cam provided and timed by Dave Premo
Aluminum fly wheel from Garm
Gauges refurbished by Jon Frampton
3.9 rear end bought from Tim the man Putland checked out by Dave Premo
Rechromed side window frames and windshield frame
Had the headlight scoops frosted per Mike Young's chrome shop
New dashpad from Stan
Complete new wiring harnesses updated by Curtis(worked with him on a few updates)

See a pattern here? Dave Premo has been a good friend and a mentor. My plan is to build a driver not a show car. I will eventually drive it to California and leave it out there. Some day I will retire and winter in California and spend my summers in the mid-west. That way I will have a roady in both places.

Things left to do--

Finish going through the frame. It was ziebarted back in the day so it has that yellowish-green look to it. I think instead of powder coating I will go with Eastwood's chassis black. I used that on my 67.5 stroker and it still looks good. I will powder coat the smaller suspension bits though. I plan on putting the 3.9 rear end instead of the stock 3.7. I a not rich enough to put Koni's on.

Strip the body which had a new probably single stage paint job years ago. Has a few minor dings but for the most part is pretty straight except for the area where the tail lights attach was literally pushed in and painted that way. I have already pounded that out on both sides. Looking at the pile of paper work I got with it looks like the car may have resided in Arizona for a while. Body is definitely solid.

Sweet parts include the ever elusive license plate trim ring, solex air cleaner, perfect front grill.

My intention is to paint the car the stock pale yellow. Too many red and silver roadsters. Nice colors but not my cup of tea.

Hopefully I will get started on it in 2016. Winter has set in here and it is too cold to be working in the shop. Stay tuned.

Here are some pics in the album-not a lot to see just yet.

Sweet Steve, really cool to see your project. With all the parts available, it should come together (relatively) quickly!

My favorite color, unfortunately mine was repainted red. Sounds like a good plan, and thanks for all you do here.

Got any pics of the headlight scoops? I'd be curious what a chrome shop can do as far as frosting the scoops.

Thanks, I scoured tirelessly and ended up buying multiples until I found an actual nice set to use on 42.

Good news to hear that a chrome shop can accurately duplicate the finish

Cole,

Here are the pictures of one scoop. They meet Mike Youngs standards so I knew I would be happy with the end product. These are phone pics that I did not resize so they are mega-pixel. They are satin where they are supposed to be and chrome on the edge. Contact Mark of Superiror Chrome Plating and tell him Mike sent you. Super nice guy. Price was fair as well.

They look nice! Thanks for posting.

Good luck with the restore. Lots of nice parts stockpiled--should make for a quick rebuild.
