I read the FAQ about the 5 speed swap for the early R16.
So just to confirm, a 5 speed U20 gearbox can be used to replace a 4 speed gearbox on a R16 engine, yes?
I would also like some pictures of (or links to) 5 speed (and 4 speed boxes I suppose) so I can pick the differences when looking a them, if anyone has them. Do they look different externally?
Can anyone identify this gearbox? The owner doesn't know what it is, but I got a tip-off that it might be a 5 speed from a roadster.
Yes, with minor modifications and the correct parts you can fit a 5 speed to a 1600 early or late. The obvious difference is how the drive shaft connects to the rear of the tranny. The 4 speed has a splined shaft that slides into the rear of the tranny. The 5 speed has a fixed flange that a yoke bolts to then the drive shaft connects to the yoke via splines. The tranny you have there does appear to be a 5 speed by the rear flange. Sorry, I do not have any pictures. Make sure you use the correct backing plate for the 5 speed or you could damage your crank thrust bearings. The 5 speed plate is quite a bit thicker than the 4 speed backing plate.
i THINK you also have to get a 5spd tranny mount. If so, get with Dave Brisco aka "dbrick" on swapping for a chevy mount before paying $55 for a stock mount.
The guy selling it has no idea, and is still saying its for a s30, which i know its not, as the starter recess is on the wrong side, and they didnt have ribs that looked like that.
I'm hoping he drops the price to something reasonable. I think its a bit steep for a box in unknown condition.
My 69 had a warner tranny which I would wear out the brass syncros on a regular basis. I picked up a servo type and it's case looked the same. Also I picked up a set of servo guts, rebuilt them and placed them in my warner case. My question is what does the case really tell of it's internals.
As i understood, the earier boxes were as pictured above, with the "V" shaped ribs. The later boxes also had the "V"'s with additional ribs, gridling the case, bisecting the "V"s

Nissan was very frugal with parts and there is often a very blurry separation point for when some parts were used in the place of others. "We'll start using those new ones when we finish off those cases of the old ones"

I think some are warner and i forgot the other type. Some have checkered design on it and some have a chess or something i forgot quite how it was. But I think there are 2 or 3 types
conventional wisdom is that the case that has more ribbing (like yours Evan) typically has the Warner synchros. The Servo type (Porsche type) synchros last longer but are VERY pricey to replace. The Warner type (brass) are less expensive to replace, and the parts are readily available. For the street, just fix what you have. If the tranny is junk, buy another and build it up.
