Hi (Introduction)

Post by Andy_In_SD »

Glad to finally sign up.

I've been into roadsters since the mid 80's. I've had in the past a 66 SPL, a pair of 67.5 SPLs and a 68 SPL. Then life & a kid happened and had no roadsters for about 10 years. Currently I have a 70 SPL to SRL conversion (Full U20 + 5 speed conversion). Picked it up about 7 months ago.

The best part is my 18 year old daughter fell in love with it the day I got it. So she scraped her money together and of course dad kicked in and we got her a 66 SPL and I am teaching her how to rebuild and all that good stuff.

She wants to go 100% stock so I'll definitely be posting in the parts wanted for her. As the 70 is already modified (SPL to SRL), I am putting in a flat dash (Zebrawood).

Both cars are works in progress as it is not the early 90's anymore, and it seems that roadster are getting quite expensive. I have more time than money, and I enjoy working on the 311's as well.

Back in the 80's, early 90's there was no forums or any real source of information other than ingenuity and perseverance. So I may have a few useful tips/tricks from back then and am always glad to share them. And reading through the forums there is great information and tips / tricks.

I look forward to contributing however I may, and seeking input from you folks.

To finish off, here is a 30 seconds video of my daughter firing up her SPL after we unseized the engine. Afterwards, we promptly pulled the head (it'll be done in a week, 100% rebuild).

Thanks,

Andy

Welcome BACK to the addiction! Great story and motivation for a second Roadster. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

This is so great!!! I'm from San Diego and I bought my first roadster with my step-dad when I was 18 too. And it was a '66! We got it from a guy in Chula Vista and he had chickens running around in his yard and everything. When we got it home we discovered that the engine mounts weren't bolted to the frame. I guess that's optional???? lol

I had to look at the video to see if it was my ex-car - but no, mine had a faux wood (veneer) dash.

Thanks for sharing - you just brought me back >20 years in time Andy. I'm proud of your daughter and you.

Welcome, it is a family affair here and we are glad you're engaging your family in this great car as well! My daughter loves my Roadster, and it is well known who will get it when I pass on (hopefully a long time from now!).

The look on her face is priceless as it fires up! :-)

But I won't be showing that video to my 5 year old daughter. She loves my roadster, and talks about us going somewhere in daddy's "race car", but i sure dont want her smoking like her dad. :-)
Will trade guitars for roadsters, food, shelter, clothes, etc, etc.

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Our roadster was purchased specifically for my wife's birthday. I have often heard that the cars are sometimes referred to as "chick cars", but I like to think that they have something for everyone.

If I had a daughter, then an SPL would be a great choice. Although the cars are quick, she can't (hopefully) get into TOO much trouble at 96 hp.

I have a grand niece ( almost 9 now) that will more than likely be receiving a unique "Sweet 16" present. When I talk to her mom she says: "What's not to like? The car is WAY cool, very cute, and every other girl in the school will just DIE from envy".

Yes - the cars have character and reflect the character of those that drive them.

Andrew,
Did not know you were that old? LOL
Giving up driving in 7 years?

My dad is 96, birth day is next month......He's thinking about giving up his driver's privileges next month...too much trouble to get his license renewed.
