I like to turn it over some with a wrench prior to cranking the stater with the plugs out.

there is another way to prime the oil to the camshaft by removing the dizzy and priming the
oil pump with a drill. I've never done this one and it is not as easy ...

The suggestion in the link is to add a little marvel mystery oil to the gas too.

today I dug a little deeper in the fuel tank. It is full of rust. Any ideas on how to clean it?

Mine was similar, I took it to a radiator shop and they boiled it out. You can have it sealed too (I did not).
Some folks here in cleaned and sealed there own (I'm fairly sure Nissanman did). I paid 100 bucks to get the rust out of mine.

Depends on the state of the rust if they can save it. You will need a new sender. Curtis in this forum somewhere claims a
VW sender is available I just got one from Dean.

My fuel tank looked like that too. I bought a 5 gallon barrel of "Metal Rescue" for $99, and a DYI sealer kit from KBS. It came out looking/working brand new. The nice thing about the Metal Rescue is that it is reusable, and I did so countless times refurbishing parts on the car for the next several months. FYI, don't think you're going to get away without doing the fuel lines...

I did not need to do my fuel lines, but I blew them out before the car sat for seven years.

I used compressed air, you can do the same with the tank off and blow some vinegar, and or stabile and or some thing better (maybe STP fuel system cleaner or metal rescue)
through the lines
till they run clear ...
67 1600 (Mods only a mother could love)
78 911 SC Targa (Severe Oversteer but still loved)

I will call around and see what it costs to have it boiled out. I'm contemplating using vinegar and baking soda to get the ball rolling. If I can pay someone $100 to do it, it might be worth it to save the trouble and time.

Running fuel lines was in my thoughts. It is a pretty simple process and will be worth it for the future.

Existing fuel lines may be fine with some compressed air and a piece of welding wire...
