Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Neither car is going to be cheap and if you do manage to build the Roadster for $18K or the Cobra for $25K then chances are you're not going to be happy with the end result. Some Cobra builders spend $25K on just the engine (a Roush 427) and no matter which Ford engine you go with it will cost you twice as much to build than it would a Chevy. Please tell me you wouldn't install a Chevy engine in your Cobra? Now even though both of these cars have almost identical HP ratings and weigh almost exactly the same, they have HUGE differences. The Cobra comes in at 500 HP and the Roadster comes in at about 450. The Roadster weighs in at about 2200 and the Cobra is closer to 2100. Of course the Cobra is a blast to drive and that feeling of instant raw horsepower and torque is a major rush but everybody who see's it already assumes its fast. The Roadster on the other hand does not look intimidating at all and in fact until you put your foot in it has a very quiet demeanor. The Roadster also has to build power which some people don't care for but for me is one of my favorite things about the car. It has a little over 500 miles on it and every time I drive it I am amazed at how well it handles and especially how stabile the car is. Rico Suave in the M series Beemer is never surprised when he gets left behind by a Cobra but he's a bit more "befuddled" when he's staring at the fading taillights of a silver convertible that looked like a Datsun but it can't be a Datsun right? :smt003 Both of these cars are a blast and I have no intention of getting rid of either one but if God forbid I were to hit hard times and had to decide which one was going first it would definitely be the Cobra cuz there's just no beating the smiles per gallon from that Roadster.

Thanks for taking the time to share this! I was originally looking at doing the donar car swap to save money, but dont really have the room.

I am thinking about getting this motor to swap into my 67.5 1600. The more that I read about sr swaps the more I realized that I would be over my head. I don't have a ton of room, can't weld etc. The u20 should drop right into my 67.5 without too many issues.

Is $900 a fair price for this motor?

I figure $5k to rebuild motor if needed, 5 speed transmission new drive shaft, etc. Much better than $10k plus for sr swap and in the end it should be worth similar money as an sr swap I'd think

I'd clean it, install it and try it as is rather than plan on rebuilding it. You can use the four speed. Or you can buy sleepyz's diesel five speed. Iirc, 1 - 4 are about the same as the 4 speed, and the fifth is a little more of an overdrive than the stock 5 speed. You will want a 2000 radiator. Look for one from a 68 as it is made to fit with the steering box that you have.

You can see some wear on the cam gear. It will need a rebuild at some point. I would drop in the U20, drive the crap out of it for a while and then decide. The U20 swap is very easy. You will be working on the SR20 for a long time. I am going to do an SR20 swap at some point. But I will still have a U20 powered car and an SR20DET powered car.

Have you driven a roadster yet? A 1600 is a capable car, and well tuned provides a great driving experience. If you are concerned about value, the clean matching numbers 1600 is probably worth as much or more than the 1600 with a swapped 2L, unless it is done to a high level. There are a lot of opportunities to build a hot 1600 for pretty reasonable relative to the options you have for a 2L. You put that $900 for the U20 into your R16, and you have a set of Z-therapy carbs and most of a header...

Don't understand the options with the 1600. It is a lot of fun and near bullet proof. Drive it first. Then worry about the 2L... or the SR...

Roadster should be here tonight or tomorrow morning. My last sports car was a 280z l28 with triple webers and a few other go fast parts. I'm wanting my roadster to be faster than that was.

I don't think you will be able to achieve that with a U20, at least on paper. Roadsters will feel "faster" especially with the top down...but l28s with triples usually put out almost 180whp.
